The GOP is running both houses of congress.
Obama is (hopefully) going to veto every piece of diseased legislation they send him.
Wall Street will probably continue to do very well.
Republicans will, of course, continue to screw the middle class and poor in every way possible.
So why would I need to watch the Presidents speech? Not to mention some meaningless response from She who castrates pigs. The lunatics are against everything Obama wants to do, and Obama is against everything the Republicans want to destroy. It's a total stalemate.
Pundits seem to think that something important happened last night. Nothing important happened. But it has given the pundits a few days worth of airtime to spew random thoughts and/or meaningless b.s.
The speech changed nothing. And nothing will change until the Huns that call themselves the Republican Party are either totally defeated at the polls, or until they win the presidency along with both houses of congress. My guess is well see divided government for decades to come. As well as meaningless SOTU speeches.

(146,317 posts)Clearly, President Obama is not going to get the things he called for. Everyone knows that. But...what the SOTU did was set the Republican Congress up for failure, by showing people what could be done, but won't be done.
Obama is looking toward the future with this SOTU and creating desire for the goals he mentioned. When the GOP obstructs and doesn't deliver anything, it could lead to even more dissatisfaction with Congress and the GOP in particular.
This wasn't a SOTU to lay out the administration's plans. Instead it was designed to provide more embarrassment for a Congress that will do nothing of value. It's a 2016 campaign SOTU. It's all a lead-up to the need to engineer a Democratic win for the executive and legislative divisions.
If Obama follows through with his veto promises and keeps pounding on improving the lot of the middle class, it might just work in 2016.
Watch for more executive action that benefit people but that cause the Republicans to condemn those actions. Obama is beginning the campaign for 2016 right now. He's thinking about the next administration and Congress. So should we be thinking about those things. If we don't, we're in for a rough road.

(32,139 posts)It's campaign mode. It's theater to encourage passivity. To reassure Americans that mere voting will be enough to save us, because we've come dangerously close to realizing that it really isn't.
The next step of the 1% Plan: Try to make Americans forget what the Obama administration taught us:
That we have united, bipartisan corporate oligarchy now, and our democracy has been stolen from us. That our problem is not merely Republicans, but a deep, pervasive, corporate, monied corruption infesting both parties and all three branches of government. And that we need deep, fundamental change - corporate money and power out of Washington - in order to fix it.
Now that the R's hold the majority, corporate-purchased neoliberal Democrats can again ostentatiously lie to our faces and pretend to support all the policies they insulted Americans for wanting for the past six years, dismissing them as as fringe, extremist, pony dreams.
But make no mistake what the plan really is. The same predatory agenda as before is headed right toward us, orchestrated and approved by both corporate parties: Predatory, antidemocratic, job-strangling "trade" agreements, endless MIC war for profit, police/surveillance state.
Bipartisan.
All wrapped up in pretty progressive-sounding words that are finally safe for our neoliberal president to say out loud, now that Republicans hold a majority. The DCCC campaign of "Accept Doom" for midterms went exactly as the oligarchy planned.
Neoliberals and neoconservatives are going to shove this "free trade" garbage into every American orifice, laughing all the way to the bank. And they'll use that money siphoned from our pockets to hire more mocking propagandists to lie to us and tell us our democracy is still functional, corporate Democrats have our back, and the chocolate ration will increased yet again if we just support corporate Democrats hard enough.
They want us to forget that we finally saw the truth with our own eyes: that we have United Oligarchy, not gridlocked democracy.
They want us to forget the need for radical, fundamental change to address the deep, systemic, bipartisan corporate corruption of our democracy - the need for corporate money and power out of Washington - and instead sink back into the delusional world of propaganda they have constructed for us, in which our only real problem is that Republicans are in power again...
...and we just have to vote a little harder to get the corporate Democrats back in.

(15,041 posts)I can't say I totally disagree with it.
My opinion is, and has been for quite a while, that we're living in a political "dark age." And I am convinced that at some point in the future (if we don't destroy the planet first) there will be a Renaissance. We may not live to see it, but the repeating cycles of human history will play out at their own pace.
In the meantime, I'm stopping to smell the roses as often as possible. It beats smelling what our oligarchs are spreading. And we're really only here for a brief moment in time.

(39 posts)The way it should work, is that once a legislator is elected, their concern should be directed to helping the American people, and that politics should end. Unfortunately, this is not the case and we are left with a broken system. The originators of the system did not anticipate political parties and that only legislators with concern for the people would be elected. They also did not envision the impact of money influencing the system. We are now left with a rotten, ineffective government.

(15,041 posts)the ease with which human beings are corrupted. Actually, they did. But the corrupt will always find a way to obscure the meaning of the constitution, or to totally ignore it.
