Mitt Romney hopes that the third time will be the charm for his White House aspirations, but a new ABC News-Washington Post poll suggests that hell have a hard time convincing voters to hand him the keys to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.
The 2012 Republican presidential nominee, who signaled to a group of GOP donors earlier this month that hes considering another White House bid, starts out at a 15-point disadvantage to likely Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton, the poll finds. The former secretary of state leads Romney 55 to 40 percent among registered voters.
Thats a slightly larger lead than Clinton holds over three other potential GOP contenders. She leads Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul 54 to 41 percent, identical to her advantage over former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush. Meanwhile, Clinton leads New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie by a similar 53 to 40 percent margin. Only former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee performed worse than Romney, trailing Clinton 39 to 56 percent.
The poll underscores that despite the perception that voters have warmed to Romney since he lost to President Obama two years ago, he would face an electorate thats hardly enamored of him. An NBC News-Wall Street Journal poll released Tuesday found Romneys favorability rating underwater; only 27 percent of respondents viewed him favorably, while 40 percent viewed him negatively.

(16,926 posts)3. Romney-Bush summit meeting: What's the agenda?
Arm wrasslin' for the top spot on the ticket?
Washington Jeb Bush and Mitt Romney are having a summit meeting this week, apparently. Itll be in Utah at an as yet-unspecified time. Theres no official word about the agenda, but the New York Times Jonathan Martin, who broke the story, writes that some party officials hope the two former governors will find a way to avoid competing presidential campaigns that would split the Republican establishment next year.
Good luck with that. Maybe they can negotiate ground-breaking superpower nuclear arms reductions at the same time.
Whats going on here? Nobodys really saying. But its our guess that this is pushback from Bushs camp against the surprising Romney talk of a possible third presidential race. Bushworld may use news of the meeting as a lever to try and get Romney to realize what they consider to be the futility of his continuing ambitions.

Considering that the office of President is the weakest branch of government, we need to focus on more relevant elections.
