Authorities have been battling an outbreak of chickenpox in Ashland, which has one of the highest rates of unimmunized children in the country. Dr. Jim Shames, medical director of Jackson County, said that more than 30 children in the Ashland School District have come down with the highly contagious disease since October. There have also been a few cases elsewhere in the county. Most of the cases involved unvaccinated children passing it on to others, he said. When the outbreak started, about 75 percent of the children in the Ashland School District were immunized. That's too small of a percentage to prevent the virus from marching through the community. To try to prevent more cases, the school district and county public health officials announced last week that unvaccinated students whose siblings or classmates became infected would be excluded from school for up to 21 days, the maximum length of time that symptoms usually appear. Chickenpox can be spread from the first day that someone is infected until all of their blisters have formed scabs. The announcement followed an emergency rule by the Oregon Public Health Authority calling for the exclusion of children infected with certain infectious diseases unless the public health officer deems they don't pose a threat to others. Shames said only a small number of children have been kept out of school. He didn't have immediate information on the exact number or what schools were involved. A few of the patients have been in high school and middle school, but most of those infected were elementary school age. The virus is spread by in the air, by coughing or sneezing, through direct contact with viral particles or from the blisters. None of the children have been hospitalized, Shames said. "They've had a miserable time of it and they've gotten better," he said. But chickenpox can cause serious illness in those with compromised immune systems, including newborns, pregnant women or those on chemotherapy. The vaccine provides a good shield though it's not a complete guarantee. One child who was immunized became infected, Shames said. "The disease is usually much milder and less contagious" after vaccination, Shames said. Jackson County Public Health and the Ashland School District met on Thursday to try to come up with a plan of attack to get more children vaccinated. Shames said that since the outbreak appeared, more children had been immunized.
