(3,937 posts)I'm in the Hudson Valley. Yesterday it was "12 to 18 inches." This morning it was "3 to 5 tonight and "10+" tomorrow.
Now we are down to "no significant accumulation through 8:30pm" then "3 - 5" tonight and a 70% chance of 3 to 5 more tomorrow.
We lost about 8 inches so far. It went from definite blizzard to 70% of 5 inches.
I work from home and love to ski -- Bring it on!

(3,937 posts)that storms named after women were not as scary to people as storms named after men:
http://www.pnas.org/content/111/24/8782.short
Then the Weather Channel took to naming storms unilaterally and now has a contest for viewers to name a storm, ugh:
One of the most widely-held criticisms aimed at the The Weather Channel, especially among meteorologists, is that the National Weather Service should be running the show, or at least involved on some level. In making this change [naming winter storms] unilaterally, The Weather Channel has essentially tossed effective risk communication out the window and their partners in the National Weather Service and other corners of the weather community under the bus, wrote broadcast meteorologist Nate Johnson, when the initiative was first announced. One of the tenets of good risk and emergency communication is that communicators speak with one voice.

(16,230 posts)I can telecommute so I don't have to go out. My only concern is power (and therefore heat).

(15,320 posts)We don't have a stove or fireplace.

(16,230 posts)So no fireplace and no way to have a backup generator.
I'm just outside of Philly. I don't think that we'll get the worst of it here.

(15,320 posts)Drafty old house and wishing I had a generator. They're not calling for widespread outages, so that's a good sign. Lots of big old trees in my neighborhood. I'm telling them to stay strong Hope it doesn't get too bad your way.

(16,230 posts)and as far as I know our new governor (Wolf, yay!) hasn't declared a state of emergency.
My understanding is that Connecticut may be hit hard. Take care and report in.

(72,300 posts)We'll watch the storm warm, dry and well fed if the power doesn't go out.
The crockpot is half filled with beef broth and buffalo chicken wings. After I de-bone the wings, I'll add a yummy potato soup mix.
Y'all are welcome to pull up a chair and set a spell.

(22,165 posts)I am sure they will be well ... but I am a worrier, too ... so I can appreciate how anxious you must feel.

(18,503 posts)We have a wood-fired cookstove (with oven!) in the eat-in kitchen in the main part of the house. 5 people, 2 of us with major health issues (cancer and heart failure). Should be OK even if the power goes out for 2 or 3 days. Walking distance to a lake and a convenience store; plenty of small farms around.

(14,691 posts)Roads are being cleared systematically. Sanitation's on 12 hour shifts to go round n' round on sanding & plowing. We can go online and track the status of the road plowing, when a plow was last through. Watching that keeps me entertained for a good while...
However, what's not so amusing is the various transit entities, the commuter trains and subway system are all announcing when they'll be shut down. Subways will stop running at 11pm. Amtrak just announced that the current train to Boston will be the last.

(11,175 posts)I expect to remain in my apartment for the next 40+ hours. By the time I have to leave for my doctor's appointment on Wednesday afternoon, it's likely that things out there will be under control.
Thanks for your concern!

(6,336 posts)And I'm fully prepared should the power go out too. I have candles and flashlights ready and my power banks (portable charger for USB powered gadgets) charging as we speak.
I'm ready for this (I LOVE snowstorms).
