Because the car wasn't placed properly in "park" when the stupid kids panicked, as stupid kids do when they get busted doing something stupid. She lived right across the street from us. The officer was "struck" but uninjured by the car, which means he will be seen as completely justified in the murder of this child. I'm so f***king pissed right now I can hardly stand it. When will this end?

"Denver police shot and killed a female suspect early Monday who they say drove a stolen car at two officers, hitting one of them in the leg. Friends of the driver described her as a teenage high school student."

(7,107 posts)A car driven into police is considered a weapon and the car supposedly hit one of the officers.
On top of that car was reported as stolen.
Who would charge or convict any officer in those circumstances?

(854 posts)A stolen car should not be a death sentence without trial.

(7,107 posts)Legally, a car can be considered a weapon if driven at and hitting people.
If the officers story is true, then there will be no charges.

(854 posts)Whether or not the officer was struck or the car rolled into him, whether he is truly injured or not, will not matter.

(13,598 posts)If there is evidence that the claim that she drove a car at them is false, or arguably if they shot her a significant time after she had done so, there will be a case to answer.
Otherwise, it doesn't sound like there is.

(37,573 posts)if you replaced the title with
Civilians shot by other civilians
then you'd have pretty much the same graph except the number of dead people would be about fifty times as large.

(1,941 posts)If it's a stolen car and the driver tried to ram the cops, well, double-dumbass on him. She was a passenger but what kind of people was she hanging around with? While I'm not one to absolve the cops automatically, trash will find trouble. Anecdotally, with people I am familiar with, I can think of a number of instances where people have gotten themselves in serious trouble, not because they started shit but because they were hanging out with people who start shit. Contagious bad ideas.
When I read the subject line I thought this was going to be a classic dick cop story. Car not parked properly, owner in house and inebriated from drinking at home. Cop says to move the car. She says I'm sorry, ossifer, I'm intoxicated and should not operate a motor vehicle. He says just move the damn thing a few feet and that'll be fine. She does it and he immediately arrests her for DUI. That's a fucking dick cop.
We had a story in my area a few years back with people upset a cop shot a kid at a school party in the back of the head. Wow, what a dick, right? Full context: kid was driving his car on school property, driving down the covered walkways with students around. He refused all commands to stop. The cop felt lives were at risk. Was it the right call? I don't know, I wasn't there. I didn't see how fast the car was driving, how close other pedestrians were. Maybe there was a perfectly fine way to arrest him without violence. But I do he never would have been shot by that cop if he wasn't driving his car down the fucking covered walkway at the school party. It's not worth getting killed over but shit, driving while tired isn't worth getting killed over and you'll see hundreds of single vehicle accidents late at night. If you weren't driving tired, you wouldn't have fallen asleep behind the wheel. It's a goddamn tragic waste but regrets won't undue the damage.

(314 posts)Mandatory. Investigations or charges should follow if necessary, but the politics of right or wrong should be kept a distance from the department and the force.

(2,273 posts)I generally don't like it when cops shoot at moving vehicles but this is a vehicle that hit someone with enough force to break their leg. It was a justified shooting.
