the red and white checked head scarf. It signifies that the individual had made the required pilgrimage to Mecca.

Do they require special merit, too?

to protect your head from the sun. I was told about the red/white head wear by the Imam of the National Mosque in Manama Bahrain. He said that is was customary among most Arab Muslims. I presume that he was not giving us a line of BS. He was answering a question from one our tour group. I had been in Malaysia and the Southern Philippines, both with large Muslim populations, but do not ever recall seeing the red/white head wear.

I thought only Muslim men were permitted to encircle that big rock. IDK, some say it's a meteor.

Maybe Charles has converted? But I'm wondering alternatively, if it has to do with being royalty?

It's not a religious requirement for women to cover but with the spread of Saudi style Islam the issue has become fraught with political overtones.

Men don't face anything like the same pressure as women on wearing headgear.

Obama does do or wear some thing to show respect to the culture involved. I haven't had the pleasure of hearing someone complaining because he did not do anything of the kid.

But it's odd he hasn't been to Mecca, being as he is a Muslim.
