MINNEAPOLIS "American Sniper" is tops at the box office, but don't expect to see former Minnesota Gov. Jesse Ventura lining up at a theater for it.
Ventura, a former Navy SEAL, won $1.8 million in a defamation lawsuit last year against the estate of the late Chris Kyle, the SEAL protagonist of the movie, which has sparked debate over whether snipers should be considered heroes. Ventura said Wednesday he won't see the film partly because Kyle is no hero to him.
"A hero must be honorable, must have honor. And you can't have honor if you're a liar. There is no honor in lying," Ventura told The Associated Press from his winter home in Baja California, Mexico. He also noted that the movie isn't playing there.
Ventura also dismissed the movie as propaganda because it conveys the false idea that Iraq had something to do with the 9/11 attacks. "It's as authentic as 'Dirty Harry,'" he said, referring to fictional movie series starring Clint Eastwood, the director of "American Sniper."

There is some epic smack down on the Jesse haters goin' on.
Also mentioned is the fact that even Kyle called Jesse a SEAL.

(6,699 posts)My sister came over last night and she had seen the movie. I told her I didn't plan to see it, and when I mentioned it took place in Iraq, she corrected me and told me it took place totally in Afghanistan. Any one able to tell me which?..or both? I can't stand the withered old fart, clint talks-to-a-chair, and I tend agree with the opinion glorifying murdering people who would probably do the same in this country if WE WERE INVADED is really hard to justify.
I'm a Vietnam vet, and I've seen enough of the ugly side of war to last me a lifetime. I won't go into it all, but I'll just say those people didn't want us there, most of them, and we did some really awful things to the country and the citizens on both sides of that ugly mess.

(29,322 posts)Notably the Second Battle of Fallujah where many atrocities took place, including the indiscriminate killing by snipers.
I haven't seen the movie but I doubt the movie includes a lot of that.

of course, propaganda will make you think all kinds of things that are not true

(6,119 posts)how Kyle described him was not a description of Jesse Ventura.
I could never imagine.. there is no way.. could I imagine him saying things to hurt Veterans.
assholes, yes.. but not what Kyle wrote in his book or said in interviews.
being a supporting member of Vets for Peace for the last 12 years.. and listening to speakers who are Veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan occupations, or family members, or from Iraqis or Afghans.. some children.
hearing from those both on the soldier side and on the Iraqi citizen side from Fallujah..
i would never, ever see American Sniper ... it is sickening.

(3,655 posts)claimed a different story. She said Jesse took at shot at Bush which makes more sense. I have never heard Jesse take a swipe at the soldiers.

(14,449 posts)Many saw it for you. Hard to believe it is less then 20 million until it is the number 1 movie of 2014. Kinda astounding for a little movie made for 50 million. Doing well overseas. It may make a half billion Worldwide by time it is done. You really should see it. You may be surprised that it is nothing like you think it is.

(51,076 posts)going through the class sucked big time though. My work week was 27 hours for the navy except the one week out of 5 I had duty then it was way more. I kept a full time job busing tables at the Warner Springs Resort. Served John Wayne, Glen Campbell and entourage while they were filming true grit near there. We weren't allowed to seek autographs or photos though. We were told they were there to unwind and escape the rigors of filming. Got to speak to them though, in fact we had some lively conversations. I'm an okie with a deep okie drawl so they liked to hear me talk, I think that was it anyway. Good times my time at SERE school
When I left heading to VN I was debriefed and was told to not talk about anything that we did at the school and for the most part I still don't. It was top secret duty, the average joe couldn't make it. I guess the reason I did was I was country with a clean as a whistle record. No blemishes at all. As far as I know I'd still have that top secret clearance and am still bound by the rules that were laid out to me upon my leaving there for 'nam. At any rate I'm not going to take any chances as I like my freedom.
I'd make as much in one night of busing tables as I'd get for two weeks pay from the navy

(51,076 posts)I wish I could have brought a memento home with me of that week but no dice. I guess I could have snook our a fork, a spoon or something and had it etched that the big man eat out of this or something. I was having too good of a time having a good time to worry with any of that though
It was a high dollar joint. This was back in '68-'69 and it seems that the cover charge just to come through the door of the restaurant was more than my navy pay for a month was.

(65,616 posts)to go on shows like Alex Jones and lie his ass off about some crazy CTs. Besides, Ventura is lying about being a SEAL, he was NEVER a SEAL. YES there is a difference between UDT and SEALS...that is why they are called two different things!
Really, Ventura should just be proud of being a Frogman...no need to pretend to be a SEAL.
That's like me, a former ground surveillance system operator, pretending to be a counter-intelligence officer. Sure we both worked together and our MOS were just a few letters apart...but we were NOT the same MOS!
