http://www.alternet.org/news-amp-politics/kevin-davis-called-cops-help-out-friend-trouble-and-was-shot-death-police-hisBoth Edwards and neighbors on the scene claim they did not hear Officer Pitts order Davis to put down his weapon before hearing gunshots. Police have stated that Davis was told to drop his firearm, and refused to do so. After the shooting, Edwards came out, saying, What have you done? Why did you shoot him? ...
Over the next two days, during his stay at the hospital, Daviss family made numerous attempts to speak with him, both in person and over the phone, but they were denied by police, who said he was in police custody. Davis was not allowed to have outside contact, which reportedly evoked frustration on behalf of attending doctors. On December 31, Davis died from his injuries sustained at the hands of Officer Pitts. Its heartbreaking to us, said his sister, Delisa Davis, that he had to die alone, that he died with the identity of a criminal. He was 44, and had never been convicted of any crime.
The family has said they were repeatedly blocked from seeing Davis until they were notified, without condolences, that he had expired. A representative of DeKalb County Police allegedly said to them, You can go see him now.

(4,524 posts)The theory is that the smart cops will get bored with police work and leave, so it isn't worth training them.

(18,634 posts)Why the hell wasn't the family allowed to see him?
It's insane and evil.
Of course there will be no repercussions for Pitts.
Cops are allowed to kill people, pets and destroy families anytime they feel like it.
All they have to say is, "I was scared" and they are absolved of all responsibility.
It's like the cops have their own confessionals that are run by the courts.

(45,850 posts)On Friday, January 23, members of the Davis-Bozeman Law Firm, along with the Davis family, held a press conference at the Decatur headquarters of the Georgia Bureau of Investigations to deliver a letter from Georgia State Senator Vincent Fort (D), requesting that the bureau launch an independent investigation of the shooting, death and arrest of Kevin Davis. When you call for help, that is what you should get. An independent investigation needs to be launched immediately so this family can understand what has happened to their loved one, said Mawuli Davis, a partner in the Davis-Bozeman firm. The GBI has yet to respond to the request.

(12,712 posts)It is being treated like a fashion trend or some bad Uncle in a family that lets him get away with stuff.
The brutality and murder involved is bad enough, but the fact that it continues as if the pipes of justice are frozen and nothing can get through, now that's telling. I know it has been said before, but if we cannot get justice and a moratorium on police violence in general and sociopathic police behavior, then we are all at risk, well, if we don't have the immunity that money provides, that is. Police should be professional and held accountable for behavior that deviates from general public safety.
They have no excuse other than what appears to be a form of cowardice in the line of duty. Firefighters will risk their lives to save people in the line of duty. In the military, service people will risk their lives for their country and each other. The excuse that these so-called police officers were in fear of their own safety sounds more like a bully's excuse and a way to make acting unprofessional seem like something other than being a thug who has little self control or even skills to deescalate a situation or assure that people are not killed or hurt if possible. That would be serve and protect, not the current shoot and persecute.
While police brutality and homicides are not new, this is all coming at a time when our police forces are becoming fully militarized and practicing SWAT military home invasions for even trivial matters, (like evictions in Oregon) while leaving child and adult trauma, dead pets and people, trashed homes, and other atrocities in their wake.
I don't know how anyone really feels safe with that and how we can collectively watch it without due concern as to how it impacts each of us and our families and friends.

(21,925 posts)and take up residence in one of the many semi-ghost towns, places too small and underpopulated for even a sheriff. While I know cops are necessary because of all the violent psychopaths who live among us, I'm getting very, very tired of hearing about all these police shootings of innocents and about police arrogance in the way they treat citizens. They turn my stomach.

(51,907 posts)Shot Three Times by Police, Then Isolated in Hospital. Why was Kevin Davis's Family Barred From Seeing Him?
http://readersupportednews.org/news-section2/318-66/28564-shot-three-times-by-police-then-isolated-in-hospital-why-was-kevin-daviss-family-barred-from-seeing-him
olice in Georgia are to review why a man who was fatally shot by an officer at his home was handcuffed to his hospital bed for the last two days of his life and barred from visits by his family, who allege that he was isolated to stop him disclosing full details of the shooting.
Kevin Davis was detained at Grady hospital in Atlanta after being shot three times by a DeKalb County police officer, who was responding to a 911 call made by Davis and his girlfriend when she was stabbed by another man at their apartment in the suburb of Decatur.
His sister, Delisa, spent his final hours begging police to allow her to see him, but they refused until he died. They denied us access to him because they didnt want him telling us what really happened that night, she told the Guardian. In his last known remarks, Davis told a medic that an officer simply arrived at his home and began shooting.
Davis had been arrested and charged with aggravated assault against the police officer, Joseph Pitts, because he allegedly ignored an order to drop a revolver he was holding. Daviss girlfriend, April Edwards, said he grabbed the unloaded gun and approached their front door after their dog was shot and they feared that her attacker may have returned with a gun.
Pitts shot Davis in disputed circumstances. Police have said that Davis approached Pitts, who was in the corridor outside the apartment, shouting: You shot my dog. Pitts had shot the three-legged pitbull dead, later alleging it charged at him after he opened the door to Daviss apartment. Police also said Pitts ordered Davis twice to put down the gun.
