Well I LOVE Super Bowl Sunday...who's with me???

I always see a bunch of Super Bowl haters on DU each year making fun of football, the excitement of Super Bowl Sunday, etc. I've seen some today.

Well I love the Super Bowl. I'm not an insane football fan, but I do love the sport. But the day has become a fun mid-winter, post-holiday, funday. Lots of awesome eats, having some great drinks with good friends. Lots of laughs. Just all around good fun.

Happy Super Bowl Sunday! And screw the Pats.

with your assessment. It is a sporting event broadcast as an entertainment. It is hardly a national treasure. The 200th anniversary ceremony of the Battle of New Orleans was broadcast on C-Span during the time the Super Bowl, I believe that would be better described as a National Treasure, as it commemorated the sacrifice and service of those who attempted to do something to defend this country from invasion.

I still have a hard time understanding some plays and calls. I think this will make all the football fans on DU have a chuckle...my son played HS & college ball (d-1)...all through hs and college every time the crowd roared with "let's go D" I assumed they were talking about my son who's name starts with a d, I would turn to my frenchie hubby who only cares about sports in which you put oil in it and he would also chant, for all those years....OMG did I feel stupid when I figured it out. But to be fair we did much tailgating before games and were usually down a few bottles of wine before it all began!

now that my 'HAWKS are about to create their legacy, I'm so in! (and was of course last year and 2005, whenever our previous one was).

For those who don't live in the Pacific Northwest - Washington state especially - you can't imagine how this feels, how pumped we are.

So many story lines:

*Paul Allen (he of Microsoft fame) keeping the team in Seattle when an LA grifter tried to move it there several years ago

*5'10" QB Russell Wilson, outdoing the skeptics and naysayers. And oddly, even though he's a heavy "Jesus freak," it's a live and let live attitude I, a Pagan Humanist, feel toward him. He also lost his dad 4 years ago, so he's fighting his own battles.

*Pete Carroll, who was fired by the Pats only to be replace by Bellichek.

*The 'Hawks - a team who joined in the expansion and has never gotten the respect they deserve!

*The truly meaningful contributions team members are making in their communities.

*Legacy team the Pats facing new legacy takeovers the Seahawks!!

*The relationship between this team and their fans - like no other in the NFL.

*Marshawn Lynch. Need I say more.

I just heard Manager John Schneider talk about how the spirit of positivity and pulling together and always striving to be better than the day before has not only taken over the team, but is infecting the region. So cool and so true. And so CORNY!

It's very interesting sociologically how this works - a team and its supporters. It probably brings in some themes I can't really subscribe to, like tribalism and nationalism. I can't really explain it, but I know it is real.

And I'm glad our team is the ragtag bunch of underappreciated overachievers that it is. They have my heart!

Feels like it was ours to win. Also feels like it balances out the NFC championship game, where we stole victory from the grip of defeat ...

Interesting to watch and hear our very religious QB and others make sense of it, when they seem to believe in a personal God who is controlling these things.

All in all, they are fine young men who played their hearts out and we love them, here in the Pac NW. Coach Pete's bad call; I guess he overthought it and ignored what he always preaches: ball control; protect the ball; it's all about the ball. Very ironic when he not only has the best RB in the league on his team, but a QB with one of the highest running yardages in the league this year!

Ritualized violence? Football players have more layers of padding and protection than pretty much any sport short of fencing. And the rules of the game have made it you can barely tackle anyone without some sort of penalty. Every sport has players that sustain injuries. Show me one that doesn't? Baseball, NBA, Hockey, Soccer??

Yes the Super Bowl is extreme commercialism. But what the heck isn't? Heck church is commercial (Christmas), politics is commercial (billions in ad spending and PACS), etc. Times Square in NYC is sickening commercial.

That doesn't mean I can't sit down and enjoy a football game with friends.

Are you aware of the rate of brain damage and long-term neurological issues in pro football players? Helpful hint: between age 30 and 49 risk of dementia is 19 times higher than the general population. Also, look up "chronic traumatic encephalopathy". 33 out of 34 former NFL players tested for CTE postmortem had it: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_NFL_players_with_chronic_traumatic_encephalopathy

The only sport you can reasonably compare American football to in terms of the risks and injuries inflicted on competitors is boxing (and football may be worse, honestly).

Feb 2015

One in three retired football players has mild cognitive impairment or other neurological issues (which is higher than the rate for boxers, in fact). We're only now starting to understand the risks involved, really; the science wasn't there until a few years ago (mostly because it wasn't in the NFL's interest to do any research). When people ranging from former NFL players to the president are saying "if I had a son, I wouldn't let him play football" and an increasing number of parents with school-age kids are saying the same thing, the sport has a problem in years to come, I'd say.

Feb 2015

Most of the people on the list you sent me are 50+. There was no evidence of long-term problems (which seems obvious to me but hey who am I) associated with concussions back then.

At least they are trying to do something about it. The Teams are limiting actual hard tackles in practice, helmet to helmet hits are being flagged and penalized often now, hits to kickers/quarterbacks (defenseless players) are getting much more scrutiny, etc. Also analyzing players post hard hits to the head on the sidelines is increasing versus before when they could basically stumble back out for the next play with no analysis at all from the hit.

Mon Feb 2, 2015, 12:05 PM
Feb 2015

It's just that most of the evidence was in professional boxers, not in football players. (Think of Jerry Quarry, for instance.) And the problem isn't just from concussions, it's also from sub-concussive hits. An NFL game averages 130 plays a game, for sixteen games a year plus the post-season; that adds up. They're taking steps to treat concussion as a more serious problem (now that they've been faced with the medical evidence and had to cough up a lot of $$$ in a lawsuit); time will tell if it's enough (but in the meantime the reduction in kids going into football will have an effect about 5-10 years down the line).

until it is too late. Look how glorified smoking was in the 40's and 50's. I remember my grandmother said she smoked for two decades because it was cool. But then in the 60's research started coming out how awful it was and by 1970 hundreds of thousands had quit smoking due to the information coming out. In hindsight it is hard to imagine that anyone thought smoking wasn't bad for you.
