I think the non vaccine movement is stupid, and it should be mandated by law that all children be, but arent they only risking themselves?

Maybe not, I dont know enough about it

and a small number of people whose bodies cannot handle the vaccinations for other medical reasons. This latter group tends to be made up of pretty vulnerable people - infants, the immunocompromised -- the same people for whom measles is the most dangerous (encephalitis, permanent brain damage, death...).

These instances of inability to vaccinate are rare, but these people are protected by herd immunity - the more people vaccinated, the less opportunity there is for it to spread.

Folks who CHOOSE not to get the vaccine - who don't have a medical reason -- are risking PUBLIC HEALTH for reasons that almost invariably come off as selfish tripe. The common good never even seems to occur to them. I am skeptical of big pharma & the state of our public health system etc, but as far as that realm goes, the MMR vaccine is one of the most straighforward, agreed-upon good-for-the-world things out there. It's one thing we should all agree on because SCIENCE. Kinda like climate change.

Measles was basically gone. The reason it is spreading again is because there are pockets of this country where it is becoming quite normal to refuse to vaccinate your kid.

It can kill sick people, babies and the elderly.
Please forgive use of caps above - not trying to yell, just emphasize and too lazy for italics.

That said, as it stands now, just about every state allows for exemptions, either religion based or based on a personal objection to vaccines.
