Ownership vs. Stewardship (Rand Paul's comments)

Even more than his views about vaccinations, Rand Paul's final two sentences jumped out at me as representative of a certain mindset...a mindset that we have a right to own anything and anyone. The belief that domination is the American Way is prevalent; WHO should dominate is the only question in the minds of many. I do believe this is the crux of my dislike of today's Republican Party.

"I’m not arguing vaccines are a bad idea. I think they’re a good thing," he said. "But I think the parent should have some input. The state doesn’t own the children. Parents own the children."

Edit to add: To use the language of ownership when it comes to people, children or otherwise, speaks volumes regarding core values.

Owning people (indentured servitude and slave labor, both of which still exist), owning resources (the effort to privatize water)...everything is about ownership and domination, not care or stewardship.

I cared for and raised my daughter, making literally thousands of decisions on her behalf ... there was not a single moment that I thought I "owned" her.

indicate a lot about how they see -- and move within -- the world, imho.
