Human beings are loathe to admit that they have been wrong.

(6,452 posts)Pointing out their idiocy just makes them dig in even further, refusing to see or admit to the dangerous nature of their "beliefs". Seriously, I think many of them would rather kill someone than admit they were wrong.

(1,210 posts)exists in the flu vaccine, it is called Thimerosal. It is a mercury-based preservative that has been used for decades in the United States in multi-dose vials (vials containing more than one dose) of some vaccines to prevent their contamination with germs, bacteria and fungi. So actually a good thing, a very good thing.
And because of this it gives ammo to the anti-vaxxers, who just point to the word mercury and have the vapors. It is sad that they do not think beyond that word and see what benefits can be gained from vaccinating a child.
I was happy to have my child vaccinated - I breathed a sigh of relief that he would be safe from some of the most awful diseases that have been around for millennia.

(11,843 posts)It is gone from the body in a matter of weeks. Methyl Mercury, on the other hand, does bio-accumulate and it is what all the fear mongers are worried about, despite it not being a breakdown product of Thimerisol. When a Anti-Vax woo pusher rants about MERCURY!!!, remind them that they are rightfully fearful of Methyl Mercury, but Thimerisol isn't Methyl Mercury.
Saline for contacts used to be preserved with Thimerisol. In 36 years of wearing contacts, I have probably had more exposure to Thimerisol than thousands of vaccinations would deliver.

(1,210 posts).......... I think if at Halloween you dressed up as Methyl Mercury you could scare most of the anti-vaxxers to death.............. hmm could be a good costume.

(82 posts)It really annoys me that people put others at risk by not vaccinating their children.
I would prefer to have the vaccines, but because of an allergy to something added to commercial chicken feed, I can not have egg grown vaccines. I can eat free range eggs, so if they were used for vaccines I would be safe. I'm 50 years old. I didn't worry about catching the diseases that I can't be vaccinated for until recently. Now there are outbreaks everywhere. What am I supposed to do, lock myself in my house, and not let anyone in? Do I have to become a hermit because of other people's ignorance?
Wake up people, it's not just your own children you put at risk.

(82 posts)He didn't want to take the chance in case my allergy was to a different component of the vaccines. That was a while ago, maybe I should ask him about it again now that there are so many more outbreaks.

(4,482 posts)that your child or children will be quarantined from school and/or daycare. Can the parent afford to be off work for weeks on end?
In the late 50's, a classmate's whole family was quarantined for polio, even though only one member was affected.
