UPDATE (8:30 a.m.)
Omaha-area closings and cancellations
***
Old man winter will be throwing his weight around today in eastern Nebraska and western Iowa. Area schools, including the Omaha district, have responded by canceling classes and activities.

Forecasters issued a winter weather advisory until noon for a swath of Nebraska from about Burwell to Hastings east to Atlantic, Iowa, and the border with Missouri. Included in the winter blast that will also be leaving behind low temperatures and strong winds are Omaha, Lincoln and Council Bluffs.

Commuters make their way south on Interstate 680 this morning as seen from the Pacific Street overpass.

Eastern Nebraska and western Iowa could get 3 to 5 inches of snow and 25 mph winds through the morning, according to the National Weather Service Office in Valley. The snow could linger into the afternoon, with the stiff winds causing blowing snow and visibility problems.

The Omaha area could receive 3 to 4 inches of snow, with east-central and southeast Nebraska into extreme southwest Iowa getting the 3 to 5 inches, forecasters said. Northeast Nebraska and west-central Iowa may receive only about 1 inch.
