Mitch McConnell's Strategy To Confront Obama Hits A Wall

Alternate title: Mitch McConnell and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Month

WASHINGTON — Before he became majority leader, Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY) promised to use the power of the purse to rein in President Barack Obama.

Now McConnell's strategy is facing its first critical test, and it's failing.

Last week the Republican-led Senate voted three times in three days to move legislation to fund the Department of Homeland Security with provisions overturning Obama's executive actions to protect millions from deportation. All three times, Democrats united to filibuster it, stopping it dead in its tracks, and leaving Republicans empty-handed.

The conundrum was somewhat predictable. McConnell had relinquished his only surefire leverage — to withhold funds to keep the government running — by promising there was "no possibility of a government shutdown" on his watch.

Without the threat of a shutdown, Democrats had little incentive to play ball, and Obama had no reason not to veto a bill that undermined his major initiatives. Complicating matters further for McConnell, Democrats are steeled by the recognition that voters typically blame the party that controls Congress, not the White House, for a government shutdown. And so Democrats didn't hesitate to filibuster the bill, and the president has been unwavering in his refusal to sign anything that irreparably harms his signature initiatives.

Meanwhile, House Republicans have no intention of bringing up a "clean" DHS bill to bail out McConnell. Such a proposal would likely lose the support of a large majority of the House GOP, making it extremely difficult for Speaker John Boehner (R-OH), who clung to his post last month amidst record defections by his members.

Of course, it's all the fault of the Democrats and their knee-jerk obstructionist tactics. It's not fair now that the shoe is on the other foot!

McConnell is seeing Democratic payback for the GOP use of the filibuster when they were the minority.

You're correct about the payback. I don't know if they thought the Democrats would just fold and give in, or if the shock it totally feigned.

I do know that today's partisan climate in the US was inflamed by the rampant Republican's obstructionism we've had in recent history. They made this mess in the first place, now if Democrats don't fight back they risk angering their constituents and losing their seats.

Glad you're here! I'm just really delighted to see our tribe shoving the enemy's tactics back down the enemy's throats. Hey, sauce for the goose, sauce for the gander. I've long been an advocate of "Taste of their own medicine. See how they like it." I guess my only surprise is how these Democrats don't seem to be acting like the Democrats we all knew and over whom repeatedly tore our hair and gnashed our teeth. They haven't caved! And we're hearing precious little compromise crap coming from the "Lame Duck My ASS" White House, either. I'm truly surprised. Pleasantly surprised, but still - surprised. Hope it continues!!!

2. I guess, the GOP starts to regret creating the Frankenstein-monster "Tea Party".

They created it as an unthinking servant and now it's out of control and ruining the game of the GOP-establishment.

And about the teabaggers and how they ate what used to be known as the Republican Party?

"You climbed into bed with it. Now it gets to fuck you!"

All languages have pithy sayings, usually understood only by native speakers.

Such as: "Nervous as a long-tailed cat in a roomful of rocking chairs."

The Chinese have a zillion or so "cheng-yu" -- four-word phrases that are complete in their imagery and meaning.

This one comes to mind: 騎 虎 難 下

Literally translated, it says: "Ride tiger, difficult down"

Or:

"He who rides the tiger finds it dangerous to dismount."

"He who rides the tiger can never dismount."

"Riding the tiger, it is difficult to dismount."

The GOP and their Frankenstein monster Tea Party come to mind.

Maybe eventually, the Republicans will understand that government is important and that their election to Congress was not about impeding government but about governing.

8. The guy led over 500 filibusters before he became Majority leader…

This is an interesting piece from last November. his shenanigans are coming back to nip his turtle tail… http://www.npr.org/2014/11/12/363572856/mitch-mcconnells-mission-making-the-senate-work-again

But he also knows how to push people toward a consensus, she says. McConnell has been a deal-maker at times — he helped forge the 2012 fiscal cliff deal, and more recently helped end the October 2013 government shutdown.

Democrats are quick to point out, however, that he has also led more than 500 filibusters against them since Obama took office. Binder says McConnell can only hope they don't retaliate in kind.

"Henry Clay hated the filibuster! He knew that it was preventing his Whig majority from getting anything done," Binder said.

So ironically, if Democrats do get their revenge on McConnell with filibusters, he'll have one more thing in common with his Kentucky hero.
Henry Clay was his hero and on his deathbed, he was a member of the (now defunct) Whig party.

Karma coming back — it's shadenfruede!

As I said elsewhere, he enabled the current extremely partisan political climate in this country, now he has to deal with the consequences.

And that is the opposite of governing so of course when the rubber meets the road they are completely clueless on how to govern making this outcome totally predictable. But thanks to Citizens United American is now an oligarchy and this is the result.

I totally agree, a bad day, or month, for McConnell is good for our country!

What a sad situation we're in with the Republican's having the majority. The Dems can stave off the worst of it, and it appears they will with Obama's veto, but some of the legislation will filter through before it's over.

I'm taking every bit of good news to heart when I can. I'm sure I'll need it somewhere down the road to keep me sane!

It's good to see you sporting so many hearts! That made me smile.

Chambers of Congress! The Senate Dems and President Obama are the only firewall between us and total fascism in our Country. The brainwashing is dangerously close to being completed.

Thank Goodness we have who we have to fight off the sociopathic monsters of greed.

That's sweet, herding cats, about the "sporting of the hearts".. thank you.

Now we have 3 filibusters to Turtle lips 419 in the last 8 years, now its payback time, and if they (right wing republicans) think a deadline on funding is going to work, think again McConnell and as for your right wing hypocrite speaker in the house why don't you and him go and get SOME needed golf lessons, while he sips on his drink at the "COUNTRY CLUB" (and contemplates if its either bourbon or whiskey) which he is a member of and that we the tax payers paid for out of our taxes in salary.
Let's not forget and remind everyone that his band of merry woman and men took 244 days off last year, which has not been lost on the taxpayers.
