"Dear valued customer" and any variation of it is a dead give away that it's fake.

spam just like that! Well, actually, better than that--without all the misspellings and poor grammar! I just can't trust an outfit that gets scammed so enthusiastically.

I try to be a good netizen and send the spam I get to their spoof department, but I can count on one of those BS phishers several times a year, nonetheless.

that the nice Indian gentleman from Microsoft who call me out of the blue to tell me my PC was infected wasn't real.

I jerked one of them around a bit pretending I was going to my computer and asking a bunch of questions, then just hung up - he actually phoned me back and screamed at me 'why did you hang up on me?' So I just hung up again.

... it is inefficient to spend time trying to scam those with any critical thinking skill. Better to weed out the smart ones as early as possible.

Every time a new 203 area code calls me I answer, say "This is an IRS scam and I am not a moron stop calling me" then block it but new ones keep calling. Been going on a couple weeks.

Luckily I know no-one in the 203 area code or I may have been inadvertently rather rude to them....
