I will always prefer a self-depricating style of humor to a self-glorifying one.

It's why I love the comedy styles of Jon Stewart and Conan O'Brien, and why I have no interest whatsoever in someone like Howard Stern or Bill Maher.

If you're a public figure whose job it is to talk about other public figures, and sometimes poke fun or satirize those other public figures, you have to be willing to poke fun at yourself, too. You have to realize you are every bit as human as your targets are, and that for all the barbs you throw out, you've got to be willing to take a few yourself, so why not act pre-emptively?

And I don't think anyone did self-deprecation better than Jon Stewart. And that's part of the reason why I love watching the Daily Show day in and day out.

Maher is often self depricating. So is Howard Stern, massively so at times. Bluenorthwest Feb 2015 #1

It's very hard to do well as a comic without boat loads of self deprecation. Stern, I have not even heard his voice in years but I used to hear bits of his show with a friend and he constantly talked about himself as being ugly, poorly endowed, difficult and unworthy of his own wife. His entire schtick is based on that sort of thing. I don't care for Stern but he's very self deprecating.
