WASHINGTON — Rep. Adrian Smith, R-Neb., introduced legislation Thursday that would help people who bought qualified coverage through the failed CoOportunity health insurer.

Smith’s bill would exempt the co-op’s customers from the health care law’s requirement that they obtain health coverage or pay a penalty on their income taxes.

Smith said those individuals need more time to review their options and should not be penalized by the co-op’s collapse. CoOportunity served as many as 120,000 customers at its peak, with two thirds of them from Nebraska.

“Many Nebraskans who purchased policies through CoOportunity Health were simply trying to responsibly follow the law, only to be left empty-handed and once again searching for insurance with even fewer options,” Smith said.
