A number of Republican-led states are considering tax changes that in many cases would have the effect of cutting taxes on the rich and raising them on the poor, the New York Times reports.
Conservatives are known for hating taxes but particularly hate income taxes, which they say have a greater dampening effect on growth. Of the 10 or so Republican governors who have proposed tax increases, nearly all have called for increases in consumption taxes, which hit the poor and middle class harder than the rich.

(20,878 posts)as is my case as I just did my Federal income taxes yesterday and this is what I came up with.
While I am ashamed to have to report this, I don't know what else I can do to change it as I cannot.
Sh*t happens in life as is my case.
As for these piglets that care to try to milk a cow that has no milk, I'd like to tell them to try living at 150% of poverty level. It is not fun and you get called a "tight wad" more times than I'd care to admit.

(20,878 posts)Some of the richer folks out there seem to think that people in my situation do not pay taxes which is a crock o'shyte!
I pay a lot of taxes ranging from sales tax to property taxes and every other sort of tax that is out there that every one else pays as well whether they realize it or not as is the case with "consumption taxes".

(14,547 posts)has this down to a science.
To raise funding for the road repairs needed, she plans on cutting the state income tax and raise the gasoline sales tax.
The top 1% of earners in the state will save $145,000 on taxes
Middle income earners will save $750.00 in taxes
The bottom earners in the state will save $0.
All earners will pay on average an extra $70.00 a year on gas taxes. So just who does her plan help the most?
To top it off, her numbers are unworkable. It will not raise enough funding to make the necessary road and bridge repairs needed. One reason why she calculated population growth, low unemployment and other factors that may not happen. She even misses the in your face observation. Many cars traveling through SC will stop at the border to fill up on cheaper gas, because the gas taxes are so low. When they rise, people will just stop when they run low, no matter what state it is. Gas stations will also take a hit on the loss of their in store sales and impulse buys from travelers. Bait and switch in the name of "fixing" the problem. Her plan will actually make thing worse.
