Lennon spoke about the song “All You Need is Love” to explain his feelings on love.
“When I was singing about ‘all you need is love,’ I was singing about something I hadn’t experienced. I’d experienced love for people in gusts, and love for things, trees, things like that, but I hadn’t experienced what I was singing about.”
On the intimacy of couples, Lennon said:
“If you love somebody, you can’t be with them enough. There’s no such thing. We don’t want to be apart.”
“It’s called love. There’s nothing that splits that up. You have to work on it. It is a precious gift, and it’s a plant, and you have to look after it and water it. That’s the secret, it’s all true folks — all you need is love. I can’t give you the formula for meeting the person you love, but it happens.”
"It has to be a true partnership, and you have to really really like and respect the person you're married to because it is a hard road. I mean, that's what I tell young couples. Don't expect it to be easy, melding two lives and trying to raise others, and doing it forever. I mean that's a recipe made for disaster, so there are highs and lows. But if in the end you can look him in the eye and say, 'I like you.' I stopped believing at love in first sight. I think you go through that wonderful love stage, but when it gets hard, you need a little bit more."
