3. It happens. Especially in years when the polar vortex reaches south

And the polar vortex is reaching south more often than usual because there is a thing call the Ridiculously Resilient Ridge of high pressure in the eastern Pacific that aids in the development of southward winds over the Canadian Rockies.

Suspicion is the RRR is a consequence of temperature changes in the north Pacific and strong polar easterlies that are associated with the ice cover anomaly.

Those are record breaking temperatures in South Florida.
Most folks down there can't handle those temperatures - not to mention the citrus.

... we are prepared for it . Like you said, the folk in Florida are not equipped.

I am really frightened for the homeless. I am hoping they have found somewhere safe.... shelter's are over full and most have exhausted their budgets because of the extended dangerous cold

and the entire house burned to cinders. That's too sad...and yes the homeless in Florida are even more vulnerable since they are certainly not equipped - even in better weather.

In clement weather, with the cross lake ferry, the SS Badger, which is still running.

In less clement weather. Lake Michigan is not something to be trifled with.

And, yup, in winter.

Bundled up, kiddies.

And yup, the lighthouse is still operational.

Still plenty of liquid water below the ice, and oxygen still gets through the ice.
