(30,250 posts)It ruined her singing career and it deprived the public of more of her wonderful voice. Although obviously she continued acting and seems to be doing quite well. I remember seeing her on Broadway in Victor/Victoria. She was fantastic. I was lucky to have seen her perform live because that was around the time that she developed voice problems and had the surgery that ruined her vocal cords. Liza Minnelli took over the role.

(45,851 posts)Not a fan of Gaga in that I don't really listen to modern popular music other than a few artists such as Grace Potter and Robert Randolph but I've caught a couple of performances that made it clear Gaga is an outstanding voice/talent.

(14,176 posts)There's been talking of her costarring in Streisand's purported film of Gypsy and I was dubious about her ability to carry it off. No more. She was incredible.

(3,112 posts)...just how much of a good singer she is. That, plus the fact that she is singing more meatier songs now. Not just the standards although tonight's performance is a perfect example, but even her own songs. She has killer pipes and she's starting to embrace that, and caring less about wearing outrageous costumes etc.
Anyway.... a fantastic job tonight!

She couldn't hit the last note on Climb Every Mountain like Julie Andrews, but her performance was stunning, nevertheless
You can tell she's classically trained.
Now, her red carpet dress....ugh. She could have scrubbed my kitchen sink in those red gloves! LOL

(57,936 posts)I kind of thought they lowered the key for Climb Every Mountain, but I could be wrong because it has been years since I heard the original version.

Which is just incredible. Most average singers have between 1.5 and 2.5 octaves. Most classically trained female singers have a range of 3 to 3.5 octaves, including my daughter. Julie Andrews had a 4 octave range and she certainly did NOT screech when she hit those notes!
She was amazing.

(118,734 posts)Almost the whole lady Gaga rendition of the song was lower than how it was sung by the mother superior in the movie 'Sound of Music'. You can find it on YouTube. (I can't link as I am on my mobile phone)

(2,893 posts)And, maybe more importantly, her phrasings were her own, well placed, not overly expressive, and not underly so. I'm more inclined to listen to her music now. I'm just disappointed she didn't perform in lederhosen and flank steak.
TexasMommaWithAHat
(3,212 posts)but she didn't go as high as Andrews.

(480 posts)She has had tons of training. I am not shocked in the slightest. It was good to see her do her thing. She is an extra ordinary talent...and a total freak.

(16,334 posts)Back when she was all over the place, she did many interviews (60 minutes, Barbara Walters, etc.) and when she wasn't all gizmo'd up, it was clear she had real musical talent. Her background and how she came to be so successful is pretty interesting if you ask me.

(43,049 posts)I was fascinated by the obvious respect she had for the old crooner. And she put in some serious effort to make that duet work.
She is, first of all, a musician and she seems to be accepting that.

(21,046 posts)I overlook the weird costumes. She can play the piano and write a well crafted pop song.
She's the only pop singer out there I think has an excellent voice. Adele has a good voice but her songs are generally the same boring
I - IV - I - IV. That means if you're in C major your chords are C - F- C- F (I'm referencing Skyfall and We Could Have Had it All).

(30,250 posts)I don't care for her gimmicky style, but the woman undoubtedly has talent. She sang the medley from "The Sound of Music" without going over the top. It was straight forward and well done. It was a thrill to see Julie Andrews appear as a presenter at the end of Gaga's performance.
