LINCOLN — This year’s proposal to authorize charter schools in Nebraska has hit the same dead end as previous proposals.

Members of the Education Committee voted unanimously on Monday to kill Legislative Bill 616.

The bill, introduced by State Sen. Tyson Larson of O’Neill, would have allowed up to five publicly funded but independently operated charter schools in Omaha.

LB 616 closely mirrored past legislation introduced by former Omaha Sen. Scott Lautenbaugh. Those bills never made it out of committee either.
