A majority of Republicans nationally support establishing Christianity as the national religion, according to a new Public Policy Polling survey released Tuesday.
The poll by the Democratic-leaning firm found that 57 percent of Republicans "support establishing Christianity as the national religion" while 30 percent are opposed. Another 13 percent said they were not sure.
It almost goes without saying that the Establishment Clause of the Constitution prohibits establishing of a national religion.
The poll was conducted among 316 Republicans from Feb. 20-22. The margin of error was plus or minus 5.5 percentage points.

I would like to see a larger sample, but I got to say, this is very sad indeed. There goes the "Bill of Rights"

Humanity has to outgrow its need to believe in Iron Age fairytales or it will eventually perish in their name.

(37,428 posts)Really, I think the rank-and-file would be pleased by some toothless bill awarding that status to some nebulous entity called "Christianity." As long as it dissed other faiths and the godless, they'd feel that their Congress had worked for them, damn it.
Scalia and Company would undergo strange contortions to redefine the word "is" to rubber-stamp the law in the face of any challenge.

(5,275 posts)This is scary and so against what the founding fathers wanted. They were for a secular government, period. Those polled are wrong just like the gun nuts among them are dead wrong about intent of the 2nd Amendment.

That said, I agree with the quoted Thomas Jefferson, but not very much of the personal Thomas Jefferson.
Where the preamble declares, that coercion is a departure from the plan of the holy author of our religion, an amendment was proposed by inserting Jesus Christ, so that it would read A departure from the plan of Jesus Christ, the holy author of our religion,' the insertion was rejected by the great majority, in proof that they meant to comprehend, within the mantle of its protection, the Jew and the Gentile, the Christian and Muslim, the Hindu and Infidel of every denomination. -- Thomas Jefferson, Autobiography, speaking about the Virginia Constitution.
