I will admit that I don't think our state is a good match for the games and it seems everyone I speak with feels the same way. We all expect huge problems with cost, traffic, you-name-it.
Since we did a royal screw-up on the "big dig" (and other projects), can you imagine what will happen with the Olympics? No-one believes the "projected cost" figures. Who really knows?
We don't need it, don't want it. My personal thought is that there should be a permanent site for the summer and winter games. All countries should contribute to the cost.
Tonight poll on NECN, only 48 % of residents polled were in favor of the games, the figure is dropping with every poll taken. I think we've had enough boondoggle expenditures. Let the games expenditures come from some other pocket.

(34,589 posts)The already-wealthy will use it to extract more money from the 99% via taxpayer subsidies funneled into overpriced construction. It will be a grand looting of the Proles, who'll get little but awful traffic and other inconveniences in return.
No.

(36,745 posts)That really is the question that should be asked and that figure may be low given another 10 years of inflation.
I like the idea of a permanent site for the games. They should be hosted in Greece permanently, the birthplace of the games and it would also help the Greek economy immensely.

(135,425 posts)The right wing think this is a way to get the federal government to invest in the transportation system. I think it's a mess waiting to happen. UGH.
I think the Olympics have gotten too big and too overblown. Where are they going to stage an opening ceremony? Foxboro? --
MA gets plenty of tourists in summer already--the Cape is packed to the gills. We don't need a zillion people coming from all over the world to stuff themselves into college dorms for a couple of weeks in a city where the security considerations would be OVERWHELMING. This place was built around cow paths--it's not an easily policed or protected venue.
If we could find an island big enough to support the summer Olympics that could be dedicated to that and nothing else, why not try that approach? Maybe the Greeks have one they can spare--after all, they invented this party.
As for the winter games, maybe there's a spot in Greenland that would do! It's not like they'd be likely to influence the games unduly, they've got lots of room, it would help their economy, and the weather in their country is usually ideal for winter activities.

(34 posts)..Boston is just not the place for this..streets are an absolute nightmare, the public transit,(T as we call it), is antiquated, unreliable, and confusing to outsiders..parking is probably the worst in the nation...

(9,527 posts)The idiots running the state can't figure out snow removal, much less something as complicated as the Olympics and that's before you account for the enormous expense of the games that isn't paid back in terms of revenue to the area.
As others have suggested, the Olympics should be held in a single location. Building giant stadiums that are used for a few weeks and then are left.
At this point, the Olympics are a giant waste of money and have long since abandoned any pretense of being anything other than jingoistic nonsense.
