Today marks the 30th anniversary of the first '.com' domain being registered

Today marks the 30th anniversary of the first '.com' domain being registered

BY Alejandro Alba / NEW YORK DAILY NEWS / Sunday, March 15, 2015, 12:58 PM

Exactly 30 years ago the .com domain was born.

If it wasn't for Symbolics, a computer company from Massachusetts, that registered the first .com domain on March, 15, 1985, we wouldn't have websites like Facebook.com, Youtube.com or nydailynews.com. ... The Symbolics.com domain is still registered and active today and it's the oldest .com domain in existence.

"In the last 30 years, the Internet has evolved from an unknown phenomenon used primarily by academics and researchers to a global communication, commerce and information sharing channel that few could imagine life without," said Verisign, a leading seller of domain names, in a press release.

Verisign said that even though new domains like .gov and .net exist, .com domains have dominance on the internet. There is at least one new .com domain registered every second, according to Verisign.
