A term that originated on Usenet, Godwin's Law states that as an online argument grows longer and more heated, it becomes increasingly likely that somebody will bring up Adolf Hitler or the Nazis. When such an event occurs, the person guilty of invoking Godwin's Law has effectively forfeited the argument.

In many circles, it means the person who resorted to pointing it out couldn't find a better thing to criticize, so they themselves "lose."
Because it's all about "winning," apparently.

The longer a discussion goes after Nazis or Hitler have been invoked, the likelihood of someone confusing Godwin's Law with the reductio ad Hitlerum approaches 1.
