WASHINGTON — Sen. Ben Sasse, R-Neb., is trying to stop the government from issuing any new Social Security numbers to the millions of illegal immigrants who have been shielded from deportation by President Barack Obama’s executive actions.
Sasse introduced legislation this week that would block those new numbers, which he said could lead to individuals receiving the Earned Income Tax Credit.
Republicans have raised the prospect that those benefiting from Obama’s deferred action program could collect thousands of dollars in such payments after they receive Social Security numbers.
Sasse has called such payments “amnesty bonuses.” He said his legislation would “help restore the rule of law and save taxpayers billions of dollars.”
