Party's over for frat after ski-resort rampage - $400,000 in damages

http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2015/03/18/partys-frat-ski-resort-rampage/24943201/

The University of Michigan's Sigma Alpha Mu fraternity has been permanently disbanded by its parent organization for not only wrecking a northern Michigan resort but also for not stepping up and facing the music.

Michigan is still waiting for information from the police on individuals who might have been involved. No disciplinary proceedings have been started against any individuals, Fitzgerald said.

About 120 University of Michigan students, members of Sigma Alpha Mu and women from its sister sorority, Sigma Delta Tau, had gathered at Treetops Resort in Gaylord in January. There was damage to 45 rooms, and students destroyed ceiling tiles and exit signs, broke furniture and doors and urinated on carpeting, pictures showed.

Damage estimates have climbed to more than $400,000.

Fuck them.

This is not by any means the first generation of this type, and it helps explain why our institutions are so fucked up (wall street, corporate corruption, etc.).

although by different frats.

It's still possible that there will be some criminal charges filed.

And I really hope that the individuals and their families will be on the hook for the entire cost of the damages, including lost business. This is inexcusable.

It looks like demolition work. And not a single student thought to give the hotel the head's up that they should call the police to stop the wreckage that was happening? (Or call the police themselves?)

And no one thought it an issue enough to try to stop it when the ceiling was being destroyed.

I would think the parents would be aghast. Though I am imagine that the explanations told by their individual children are always exculpatory.

Reasons cited by national officials for pulling the UM fraternity's charter include members' lack of cooperation in identifying its members involved in the destruction; the failure of those responsible to come forward; and members' failure to stop the damage. The incident, which occurred over the weekend of Jan. 16-18 at Treetops Resort in Gaylord, resulted in hundreds of thousands of dollars in damages and attracted national attention.

"Sigma Alpha Mu's values and standards of conduct were violated by the actions of those members whose behavior was abhorrent," national Sigma Alpha Mu executives said in a statement. "It is regrettable that these vandals, as well as the officers of the chapter, decided that avoiding personal accountability and/or university sanctions took priority over the welfare of the entire chapter ... Sigma Alpha Mu worked in cooperation with university officials and regretfully agreed with their request to close the chapter."

more likely, they'll be out there insisting that their little snook'ems couldn't possibly have been part of this and it must have been somebody else's little snook'ems.

And then when video surfaces showing their little snook'ems hard at it, they'll plead "affluenza."

They trashed a reception hall, and among other damage managed to break several sinks off the wall, allegedly while urinating in them.
