Heaven forbid someone try to defend themselves.
Making It Gets Better videos and holding "diversity workshops" are fine, I guess, but victims of school bullying must be allowed to defend themselves when facing violent attacks.
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/05/02/darnell-dynasty-young-gay-student-stun-gun_n_1471921.html
Darnell "Dynasty" Young, a 17-year-old gay student at Arsenal Tech High School in Indianapolis, Ind., is facing possible expulsion after he fired a stun gun at bullies he claims were about to beat him up, the Indianapolis Star reports.
According to the paper, Young said classmates frequently harassed him, at times throwing rocks and taunting him for dressing too flamboyantly. Chelisa Grimes, Young's mother, also told the paper that when she went to school officials to complain, they placed the blame on Young for being "openly gay."
The conflict came to a head on April 16 when six students allegedly surrounded Young, threatening to cause him physical harm. The Indianapolis Star then reports Young took out a stun gun his mother gave him, and fired it into the air to scare the students. The teen was handcuffed and now faces a hearing that will determine whether or not he will be expelled from the school.

(5,417 posts)If you bully somebody (and I mean physical, not just verbal), I think you take on risk. You might be beat up, you might get tazed, or you might get shot. If you don't want those risk, don't attack other people.

(11,304 posts)of my weight. I just keep walking and pretent I don't hear it even though I do and hurt deep inside. But what we have today is a good thing. I know kids in this little rural community there have been a couple of kids bullied now they love being home taking online courses. If the teachers don't do anything I will beg my son and daughter-in-law to pull their kids out and home school them. My daughter-in-law's younger sister had a big mouth and seem to get in trouble alot with others in middle school. So she was home schooled and love it.

(9,902 posts)I think I would have resorted to pepper spray first. But this kid wasn't getting any help from the school, I honestly can't blame him for wanting to protect himself. The school wasn't going to step in.

(11,481 posts)Or does it not apply if you're gay and being attacked?

(11,481 posts)wants to get hit. So self defense will happen eventually, even if you try NOT to fight back. It's instinct.
And I agree, it's ridiculous.

(7,745 posts)Bringing a stun gun and discharging it to intimidate other students is not the appropriate response to bullying.
MrSlayer
(22,143 posts)He went to the authorities and they blamed him for the bullying. Passively accepting beatings and worse is not acceptable. Fighting back is the only option left open. When you're getting ganged on you need an equalizer. I would rather see it taken care of with a fair fight but bullies rarely travel alone or have the guts to go head up with someone. I think he saw no other recourse.

(7,745 posts)Are you really going to claim that students should be allowed to bring dangerous weapons to school?
How do you propose they rewrite the school's rules to allow anyone who claims they were bullied to bring dangerous weapons into school with them?
socialist_n_TN
(11,481 posts)of you by SIX guys. Yeah, that would work. Unless you're dead.
In my entire school career, I only got into 4 fights. The main thing I learned is that I don't like getting hit. IT HURTS! So I eventually learned HOW to fight. And even knowing how to fight REAL well, I don't think I'd want to fight 6 guys at once. Somebody, or several somebodies, could easily get killed that way.
You've got to face the fact that people WILL defend themselves rather than get hurt.

(7,745 posts)Call a lawyer BEFORE bringing a weapon to school.
At some point prior to bringing a weapon to school there must have been a point where legal and/or criminal actions could be taken.
Selatius
(20,441 posts)And he had no escape route. He was surrounded. What would you expect him to do? He obviously felt he was in mortal danger enough to pull the weapon and discharge it into the air.
Yes, he should be punished for bringing a weapon to school, but I believe the school's dereliction of duty in addressing the matter and that he was surrounded by six guys ready to punch him into the ground should serve as mitigating factors. That the school basically blamed the victim for the bullying is fundamentally outrageous.

(7,745 posts)Are you really being so obtuse that you are trying to claim that a device designed to electrocute people into submission isn't a dangerous weapon?
Edweird
(8,570 posts)Taitertots
(7,745 posts)They are dangerous weapons and people who bring them to school deserve to be expelled. They are basically a weapon designed to incapacitate people with electricity. Electrocuting people to the point of incapacitation is DANGEROUS.
Edweird
(8,570 posts)Tell you what. You get a hand held stun gun (not a taser) and I'll put $1000 in my pocket. If you can incapacitate me using the stun gun the money is yours. Deal?
Taitertots
(7,745 posts)Finding someone to do something stupid doesn't make it less dangerous. They are still dangerous weapons that should NEVER be in schools.
I'm not going to try to hurt you for $1,000. I'm not going to try to hold you down and electrocute your face and neck for money. Go film someone electrocuting you with one if you feel like getting hurt.
Edweird
(8,570 posts)I wouldn't offer the $1000 if I thought there was the slightest chance you might succeed.
Much less if I had 5 accomplices.
Taitertots
(7,745 posts)And people who bring them should be expelled. At least if we can't agree on how "dangerous" it is, I'd hope at least we could agree that it is a weapon and has no place in schools.
I think you would be surprised how long someone could hold a stun gun to you. Especially, if they are much bigger and/or much stronger.

Just saying it's time to throw the books at the homophobic pos.
Sorry, but I get kindof worked up about this sort of thing. Not (very) gay, just got bullied alot.

(9,154 posts)There are too many repetitions of similar situation. It is a pattern, and my guess is driven by policy (thus is deliberate). The only escape for parents and their kids is not to play the game, but that's kind of hard to do when most parents want their kids educated and the police force attendance.
My solution was not to have kids. Your solution could be different.

(10,718 posts)as apparently the only one armed was the guy who is in trouble. If any of those six felt that their lives were threatened, then they could have justifiably killed the guy in self defense?
