Who here is actually surprised that the GOP is having issues with gays in their own camp?

If you are surprised, then you haven't been paying attention to anything that the GOP stands for.

Hey, more power to them, I say. It's great that they're at war with the homophobes running the show on the other side. Maybe they CAN change the anti-gay culture of the party…

But I doubt it.

All-in-all, let's not forget that people in question are actually gay REPUBLICANS.

So when you look at it, that's sort of like having chickens who working are as executives in KFC's corporate headquarters.

But really, when it comes right down to it, ANY amount of gay is too much for the Bryan Fishers of the world, right?

But as long as those gay GOPers are all about furthering the greed and corporate whoring their party and would just diminish their own gayness, the masters of the party can tolerate their cohorts…

Just barely, it seems.

I'm surprised they have anyone left in their lily-white man's club who doesn't fit their definition of 'real' Americans.

Until I realized that their main motivator is money and greed over the rights of people who are just like themselves.

Some people are willing to 'take one for the team' when they agree with the team on just about everything else.

You see the same thing on the other side. Lots of Dems strongly disagree with certain aspects of the party platform, but nonetheless agree with enough of the rest of it to stay in the fold.

You also see it with other Republican groups. There are plenty of conservatives who can't stand the Falwell/Robertson crowd, but would rather tolerate them than go to the other side.

Being gay in the modern republican party is like being jewish in the waffen ss. A person must have serious self esteem issues.

What this incident shows is precisely how much they have to give up to keep their taxes low (by keeping the social conservative loons on their side).

(This isn't strictly speaking accurate. There has been a great deal of fantastic research on how capitalism in fact structurally works against LGBTQ people through a variety of discursive and financial mechanisms, but it's also true that capitalism is theoretically completely devoid of any "values" whatsoever, positive or negative, against anything but profit; for this reason, it appears to be tolerant, since it can tolerate anything but a slowdown of accumulation. Accumulation is capitalism's only value.).

i've known a good number of gay republicans and not one of them would i actually describe as self-loathing.

every single one of them viewed the republican position on gays as a negative, but said they weren't going to based their entire political orientation on that one single aspect. after all, they defined themselves as more than just being gay. they also had an interest in taxes, national security, or whatever. on balance, they felt republicans were more in line with their stance on most issues. not gays, obviously, but on most issues. or at least on taxes, which often is a single-issue determinant for republicans.

so, yes, i'm surprised that any gay republican could suddenly have a problem with the republican attitude towards gays. what's changed, really?

if they're upset now, why weren't they years ago?

For many years I was friends with a gay Republican. About a year ago, we were arguing about some of the people he was supporting politically and about their awful positions on gay rights. This guy actually had the nerve to say, "I don't care about gay rights." I decided then and there that anyone who would put his personal greed ahead of the civil rights of himself and others was not worth having as a friend. Gay Republicans think that the money they save in taxes is enough to insulate them from the problems that the rest of us little people face. Fuck them. They deserve whatever they get.
