I just realized why conservatives HATE Jimmy Carter so much, and why they constantly compare Obama to Carter. Especially Dick Cheney....
Because Carter brokered a PEACE TREATY between Egypt and Israel in 1979, and made the only real progress towards a lasting peace in the middle east since Israel was created. Now their heads are exploding over the prospect of Obama doing the same thing.

How all of the history books praise the political leaders who were essentially too stupid to take the actions that were necessary to PREVENT wars from happening.

It was not to take over the oil and sell lots of it to make money .If they did that, then the price of oil would drop and the Saudis and everybody else would be really pissed.
The real reason was to take over the Iraqi oil fields and LIMIT production to drive the price up and keep it there.
...Among too many other money making reasons too numerous to list.
Cheney and company detest low oil prices. It removes reasons for their pricey drilling equipment, doesn't make their friends in the MIC money rebuilding after "freeing the shit" out of people, and most of all, their profits drop.
They absolutely despise the fact that oil prices have dropped. $4 a gallon under Bush, $2 a gallon under Obama. Enough said.

(7,813 posts)Republicans love warmongers.
In the past 40 years:
Democratic Administrations:
Worked for peace between Arabs and Israelis
Worked for peace in Northern Ireland
Carter got peace prize
Al Gore got the peace prize for climate change
Good economies (except for the malaise of the 1970s - hardly the fault of Carter)
Health Care
Energy conservation
Upon retirement, do charity work (Habitat for Humanity, Clinton Foundation)
Republican Administrations:
Start unnecessary wars and invade random countries
Had the biggest terrorist actions against Americans (Beirut, World Trade Center)
Energy splurge
Economies were below par
Upon retirement, paint pictures of themselves in the bathtub and make speeches for corporation for big bucks
It's no contest. Republicans are eating themselves up with jealousy over not getting international recognition for what they've done and they can't understand why. They refuse to believe that they have to do something besides make their buddies richer.
Name a Republican ex-president that can travel to pretty much any country in the world and validate an election like Carter has done.

No, Republicans hate Carter because he understood that the measure of a nation isn't its treasury or military, but its citizenry. And in my opinion, he was the last president who not only got that, but actually applied it. i think Obama 'gets it," but he's so snared up in "politics as usual" where guns and gold rule the day that actually implementing hte ideal doesn't seem terribly forthcoming.

And back then he was energy and climate conscious. Anybody remember the Aries K car. It got around 35 miles to the gallon. He was cool with a K. It was how I got interested in politics. What gets me with this whole Iran and Israeli thing is, there is only one President that I most definitely know gave Iran some weapons and stood in front of the whole World and said " The United States doesn't cut deals with terrorists" and he was a Republican.

(1,980 posts)Carter's great sin was suggesting the US had made mistakes at times. It wasn't a diatribe against America, it was an observation that Vietnam and the 60s had happened and the country needed to assess the results. That was unpardonable for many people because it was hard. That was about it.
The funny part is that when they criticize Carter, they ignore his continuance of his predecessors' policies in many areas. The Carter Doctrine? That was just NATO or ASEAN applied to a different region. The global war on the left? No, I'm pretty sure the killers of Rutillio Grande and Oscar Romero were trained at the School of the Americas (I said the left because there was a world of difference between Soviet imperialism and Romero's criticisms of Salvadoran society). Reagan's much-bloviated arms race? Pretty sure it got its start in 1979-80, with the growing resentment of Soviet adventurism. The difference are really ones of degree. Carter wouldn't play fast and loose like the idiots in the Reagan administration and he was less willing to write a blank check to DoD, but that was about it.
Aside from the first paragraph, the reason Cheney doesn't like Carter is because Cheney hates anyone not as warped as himself. He's so far gone into his fantasy of empire creation that he can't stand anyone who disagrees even a bit.

Halliburton could never tolerate that kind of thinking. They
needed and still need the world to use oil for profit.
Carter's solar roof on the WH was therefore destroyed
by Reagan.

(17,656 posts)Instead, President Carter used diplomacy to try to get the hostages freed.
Then the next year, in 1980, Saint Ronnie -- the B-rate has-been actor that all of the Republicans thought never did anything wrong -- said "public criticism of the President of the United States during the campaign stops at the water's edge."
In other words, foreign policy was off the table while Reagan ran for President.
Then about 5 minutes later, Reagan started bashing President Carter over his way of handling the Iranian hostage situation.
Cheney is a hypocrite, just like Reagan, just like their hero, Nixon.
Reagan never said a bad word publicly about Nixon.
Reagan may not have liked him, but he never criticized him.
Because he wanted Nixon's donors and supporters to support him later on, when he ran for President.
While Cheney adored Nixon, even worked for him; thought that Nixon was just great.
Yeah, great, sure, yeah, right.
The only President to ever resign from the office of the President!!!!!
Nixon was a great crook, that's for sure.
A great loser, a great big mistake!!!
On top of which, Nixon was an anti-Semite!
While talking to H.R. Haldeman one day, Nixon referred to Kissinger "as a Jew", and that conversation was recorded in the infamous White House tapes.
As if Kissinger being Jewish somehow made any difference whatsoever in Kissinger's advice to Tricky Dick!!

(469 posts)But the Reagan campaign squashed it - actually told Iran's leaders to KEEP the hostages until after the election, because Carter would have won if he had managed to get them home. Did nobody find it at least a little bit odd that the hostages were released at practically the same moment that Reagan was being inaugurated? "Hold 'em until I'm in office, and I'll make you RICH, and sell you some weapons (from ISRAEL, no less!) besides!"
And later on in his Presidency, when Henry Hyde pushed a budget amendment through making it illegal for the President to use federal funds to finance the South American Death Squads, he and his CIA pals put together the "Drugs for Guns" deal, and essentially CREATED the Crack addiction epidemic.
So, as Stephen Colbert would ask: "Great President, or the GREATEST President?"
TrollBuster9090
(5,955 posts)The Reagan election campaign had convinced the Iranians to hold onto the hostages until AFTER Reagan took office, specifically to make Carter look bad. It was the beginning of a 'beautiful friendship' between the Reagan Administration and the Iranian govt.
Major Hogwash
(17,656 posts)We can never forget that very significant event whenever discussing Reagan.
It preceded Saint Ronnie's blunder in Lebanon by more than 2½ years.
staggerleem
(469 posts)... and how he sabotaged LBJ's peace deal with the Vietnamese. There are recordings in the LBJ library of Johnson speaking about this with Everett Dirkson, how it's "treason", but he didn't want it to get "into the campaign" because he feared it would cause the voting public to lose faith in the whole electoral system.
So, when you think about it, this is pretty much just standard operating procedure for Republicans. If a Democratic President s working on a peace deal, they do what they can to sabotage it. The only difference is that Nixon & Reagan had to do it in secret. Today's Rethuglicans can do it right out in the open, because POTUS is black, and a socialist, and we don't like the pastor at his church and he's a Muslim anyway, so hating on him is perfectly cool ... hell, last year, we even had the Democratic candidates for the Senate & House running away from the President!
Besides, making peace runs absolutely counter to EVERYTHING that Republican America believes in!
Major Hogwash
(17,656 posts)When Saint Ronnie told him not to release the hostages until he gets in to the White House, the Ayatollah kept his word until Saint Ronnie was sworn in, by some 20 minutes after the ceremony ended.
It was pretty obvious to the entire world that some shenanigans had been afoot hidden behind the curtains somewhere.
But, the point that the American mainstream media missed in reporting that whole, long ordeal was the outstanding fact that all 55 of the American hostages were returned safely, and relatively unharmed.
They spent 444 days in capitivity, yet none of them were beheaded, and none of them were tortured.
And for that, I grudgingly gave the Ayatollah some respect . . he was a man of his word.

(2,941 posts)and nuclear subs were incredible achievement at the time. It's easy to see why a coward like Cheney would hate a true American hero. Cheney has nothing to compare - only lies, fraud, torture, death, destruction and more death.
Outside my family, the main person, outside of my father, the main man who has had an influence on my life is Admiral Hyman Rickover. I was one of the two young officers in the program to build atomic submarines. There were two built: the Nautilus and the Sea Wolf. I was in charge of the crew that was helping to build the Sea Wolf and building the nuclear power plant that later became a prototype. Rickover was a man who demanded absolute excellence and total dedication from all those who worked under him. He demanded as much from himself. And so he set a standard of commitment and perfection in life that I had never experienced before. He really had a great impact on my life.

(1,370 posts)and if we were living in a culture that cared about the truth he would be given the recognition he deserves.
Jimmy Carter early on realized we needed to start shifting our focus to solar and ween ourselves from the dwindling supplies of oil and coal. Essentially he was taking on the oil industry. That was way back in the early eighties. If we would've followed his advice we would be living in a different world.
Instead we followed Reagan and his greed is good, profit is God, screw the poor and middle class, trickle down, unregulated capitalism... And it's become crystal clear it's unsustainable. Probably deep down in somewhere in the dark corridors of Cheney's brain he know Carter was right and he hates him for it.
Carter is a perfect symbol of what's wrong with the Democratic party. How many times do we hear Democrats running for office eulogizing about how much they respect the great Ronald Reagan? When's the last time we heard Jimmy Carter or FDR mentioned in the same reverential manner? Almost never because they represent a ideology no longer embraced by the the Democratic party. Carter had his flaws but he was probably our last Democratic president.
