As I am basically a cheap bastid, I resisted the notion of paying for radio content for a long time. SiriusXM made an offer that I considered too good to refuse, however, so I got a six-month subscription. I'd been listening to NPR since inception, but their decidedly pro-corporate stance on some issues was leaving me cold. The straw that broke the camel's back was NPR's most recent fundraising drive, which always rankled due to the length and frequency of the sales pitches. With a new SiriusXM subscription, I began listening to Progressive Talk during my hour-long commutes to & from work, along with sitting in my car during lunch hour to listen.
I am quite impressed with the three hosts to whom I listen the most: Ari Rabin-Hovt in the morning, Thom Hartmann (I was already familiar with his work), and Michelangelo Signorile in the afternoon. I'd like to listen more to Mark Thompson, but I'm usually doing something else when he's on. My main gripe with the programming is the commercials, which come as frequently as on AM radio talk shows.

(52,166 posts)and having SIRIUS radio made it bearable. I still have the service but am on the lowest tier so I still get progress. I listen to Ari and Michelangelo still but now only for about a 20 minutes at a time instead of over an hour each way. I also still drive back to Raleigh on occassion and thus listen for the hour at a time then. I agree on the commercials but I think that at least some of the shows are also syndicated (stephanie Miller for instance)

(25,984 posts)once my six-month special deal expires. As I mentioned, it goes against my grain to pay for radio, but I must make some concessions to personal satisfaction. Congratulations on your shortened commute. Mine is making me look for something closer to home.

(1,735 posts)you can get a tune in or stitcher app, hook it up to your car radio, and listen to progressive radio. Works for us and doesn't cost a monthly fee. A blessing these days for folks on a budget.

(46,192 posts)when I renewed it for the year, it was further discounted, to roughly $55/year. not very many music channels with it, but it included internet listening, so I can listen with my smartphone. almost any other package was almost $20 if you included internet listening, so this package was a winner.
not sure if it's still offered, but it includes Sirius XM Insight, NPR, Progress, etc., but not MSNBC. it was cool having MSNBC but not worth the almost $14/month to get a package with that one included.
I am on that package. I do miss msnbc on my chorus nights but as you point out it is very hefty a month to get it.
