Cruz, Walker, Kirk andespeciallyBolton are furious at the world. Their solution: Declare war on it.At the end of a week when many paused to reflect during Passover and Easter ceremonies, a question with no real answer seemed to crash into our culture with all the subtlety of a marching band in a funeral parlor: Why do so many Republicans seem so angry all the time at so much around us?
The fury of some like Ted Cruz is understandable. Its fueled by his massive ego and outsized ambition along with his personal belief that he is so smart and the rest of us are so pedestrian that he can manipulate opinion to win the Republican nomination for president with the support of the mentally ill wing of his party.
A real president, Cruz the bombardier said last week, would stand up and say on the world stage: Under no circumstances will Iran be allowed to acquire nuclear weapons. Iran will either stop or we will stop them.
Then there is the minor league Cruz, the tough talking, totally in-over-his-head governor of Wisconsin, Scott Walker, who is running to crack down on the salaries of teachers, cops and firefighters everywhere. Oh, hell also teach Iran a good lesson by throwing any deal out the window no matter what other countries might think. Imagine Scotty informing Angela Merkel of his decision while he wears his Cheese-Head Hat.
There are so many others too. Theres the kid who started the pen pal club with the ayatollah, Tom Cotton. Theres the mental midget from Illinois, Mark Kirk, who went right to the basement for his best thought on Iran, claiming that England got a better deal from Hitler than the U.S. got from Teheran. Kirk, not a history major.

This article is well worth a trip over to TDB and a full read; it's the type column Barnicle used to write for the Boston Globe.

(930 posts)when it comes to war...actually when it comes to anything. Yes, it is puzzling how they can at one moment expound on their love for Jesus and then be for everything that Jesus was against. Like killing people and seizing their property. Religion for republicans is really more of an social image thing than anything else. They really don't do much self reflection.

To make things even worse he defined American exceptionalism and has largely survived their most viscous attempts at sabotage. It is all a grand tantrum by mediocre minds all Republicans have to offer is decline.

What passes for Republicans today is off the chart in terms of economic planning the classic measure of the old left-right divide. Eisenhower (for certain), Nixon, and even Reagan would not make it in the contemporary Republican Party. Nixon and Reagan planted the seeds for the monsters in the Republican Party today.

(32,139 posts)It is the corporate MO to divide. Build hatred and suspicion between groups, between the Red and Blue teams. But the truth is that we have much more in common with each other than we do with the corporate thieves who are looting and oppressing us all.
Below is the very best post I have read on DU in a while. It is by DUer, F4lconF16, and it exposes the MO of the corporate propaganda machine exactly:
On the contrary: there is a ton of money in that.

They care about racism, sexism, and other forms of bigotry very much. You said as much yourself.
"And by having these serious differences they know they can keep us fighting between left and right while they get what they want on things that do matter to them"
It has been a tactic of the American elite since its very beginning. Our political and economic system is uniquely designed to fracture the working class, to keep us from uniting. It's why laws were passed in the early 1800s forbidding interracial communications--the poor Irish and the slaves were beginning to cause worry. It's why whites and blacks have had their hatreds stoked by their literal and financial masters against one another for the last 200 years. It's why gay marriage isn't legal everywhere yet, despite a majority of people supporting it. It's why women are still discriminated against (though there is a far, far longer history to that than just our political system, and indeed, political systems at all). Our entire political history has been carefully balanced oppression stacked on top of and woven into more carefully balanced oppression. Sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn't. So far it's worked more than it hasn't.
It is absolutely critical to keep us divided amongst ourselves. The elite care more about those issues than you might think, because without them, the people will realize their own power as one. They will become a single working class, rather than blacks and whites, men and women, straight and gay. We are a dangerous mass of humanity that would roll over them like the ocean rolls over a few pebbles.
This is why these social issues are just as important as the economic ones, the power struggles. They are utterly critical to maintaining the illusion that there is no true working class, that we are separate, different from one another. The elite care very much about maintaining that illusion.
Enough division. Enough hatred. Enough propaganda.
Red versus Blue is a scam, a tactic to keep us divided and unable to fight back. We are the 99 percent, and we are ALL the victims of the stunningly united corporate government that now rules and exploits us:Mass spying on Americans? Both parties support it.

It took them 15 years to take over the Repuke party and push Goldwater, and Nixon brought them all into the core of the party in 1968. The fundy churches were brought into the equation in the 1970s and by 1976 they had de facto control of the Republican party.

But why are they so immature, untraveled, narrow minded, selfish, look like vintage 50s neo-Birchers; also for their age some are rather unfit, pasty, mean & unattractive in personality & physically like Cruz, Rove, Walker, Cotton, Huckabee, Jeb, Rush, Christie, Ryan, Rand Paul. It's strange, like from another era. I guess they didn't spend any time overseas working or volunteering to help those in need, with NGOs, the Red Cross or groups like the earlier Peace Corps(!). And they don't appear to get time outside in nature much. The job, ideology, family and church must be the sum of it. And CPAC, the annual gala.

Most conservatives have never been outside the US, and haven't a clue about how the rest of the world operates. I have had conservatives tell me with a straight face that Obama is a socialist. If Obama were a European politician, he would be center-right economically and center-left socially. No one who has a clue about actual socialism would call Obama a socialist. I had one libertarian tell me that Obama was a socialist, a Marxist, an anarchist and a fascist. Simultaneously. Ignoring the obvious fact that Obama is none of these, three of the four are mutually exclusive.

(65,616 posts)they have to turn to hatred to get what they want out of their brain dead voters.
The GOP electorate only has two main emotions, anger (war war war) and fear (homosexuals, atheists, liberals). Beyond that, there is not much for them in the realm of humans. Compassion, nope not at all. Empathy, see compassion. Understanding, since when? Responsibility, not on your life. Integrity, sold to the highest bidder.
Though all the other emotions are there, dormant and withering from neglect, their lizard brain has lost the pathways to those parts. Most of their frontal lobe is dedicated to Fox news. Their cortex now fires instantly at the site of a hippie, black person, gay couple, wedding cakes, pizzas, guns, blood, death, taxes and Fox news. Only guns, blood, Foxnews and death get positive reactions. The others get an instant pulse of negativity that can lead to many things...none positive for the victim.
Although they are very violent, they temper it with cowardliness and non-committal oaths of manhood. Like showing up at a protest. This fact is often hidden under the mountain of lies they tell about being at work and not having any time.

(59,593 posts)Because they know that the old, white, intellectually bankrupt and literally dying political party they "control" can last no more than ten years more as a national force, absent massive internal ideological change.
Because the very change that reality demands (a younger, increasingly secular, increasingly diverse and heavily indebted/discarded electorate, destabilized climate, a multi-polar world and the simple inescapable fact that BOMB EVERYTHING! doesn't work as foreign "policy" is a concept that induces at best full-on mental anaphylaxis in latest crop of grifters taking the stage to thump the same old drum of God, Guns, Fetuses and "Faggots".
Because they lack the energy to even regurgitate the idealized, imaginary past that we're supposed to "return to". The best they can come up with these days is longing for the days when we were all supposedly wiping red, white and blue tears from our eyes, longing for an idealized imaginary past (RonaldReaganRonaldReaganRonaldReagan). If getting nostalgic for nostalgia isn't political Cheyne-Stokes respiration, I don't know what is.
Because the logical conclusion of grooming, elevating and electing candidates who not only can't govern, but don't even believe in government is a whole sticky, greasy, stinky kettle full of elected officials who can't govern - and not just with quiet incompetence, but obviously so, to anyone who's watching with more than a few marbles to rattle together.
Because they're fools who think that magical thinking, wishing on a star and Jesus are all you need to make it come out OK, and the world is just a fucking bit more complicated than that, and Barack Obama knows it.

(10,252 posts)From my Buddhist perspective, anger is an afflictive emotion that arises as a response to the ego either not getting what it wants, or getting what it doesn't want. It's one of the hallmarks of an undisciplined mind that thinks the self/ego is a real, solid thing and is ever more important than anyone else's desires and needs. They are resistant to change, and the world is changing faster than they can cope with having their belief system repudiated at every turn. Their white, middle-class community is being invaded by people of color, people who speak a different language, people who aren't Christians. Their children have friends who are multi-racial and multi-cultural. Their daughters want a career as engineers, scientists, business owners. Their sons get crushes on coffee-colored girls -- and boys. Everything they believe in their self-centered, prosperity, fundamentalist, bible-thumping church is just not turning out work so swell. And so they cling ever the more tightly to the belief that their suffering is all the fault of those awful people "out there." They don't understand that all phenomena is subject to change. Everything is impermanent.
They never look inside at their own mind to discover how it works and examine what is "self." They have never been taught the practice of "calm abiding" as a response to change and impermanence. They have never been taught that compassion for the suffering of others, and working for the benefit of others is a path that will lead them out of their own unhappiness and dissatisfaction with an ever-changing universe.
What I want to know is where the Hell is the Church. When will the Church stand up and repudiate all the anger, greed, and fear that fuels the hate and fear-mongers. The teachings of Jesus to feed the poor, heal the sick, practice peace and tolerance, and love thy neighbor are perfectly excellent teachings. Where are the sermons on the Good Samaritan, the woman about to be stoned, Peter told to put down his sword, cleansing the temple of the money changers? What happened to the Sermon on the Mount? Doesn't the Church teach that anymore? Has the Church lost its mojo?
The thing that we the people need to do is to have compassion for the crazy hate-mongers. They are deeply in need of teachings on compassion. And a good place to start is Buddha's teaching the 4 Noble Truths, the first of which is the truth of suffering.
