Elizabeth Warren (Daily Show)
<snip>
Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) told Jon Stewart that the influence of the wealthy on Washington was so pervasive that many lawmakers had probably stopped noticing.
The problem weve got is that there is so much money flowing into Washington, so much power (and) so many lobbyists, that it becomes the norm, she said. I want to say it this way: The wind only blows from one direction it only blows from the direction of those who have money.
Warren appeared Thursday night on The Daily Show, where she said the wealthiest Americans had tilted the playing field dramatically in their favor.
Powerful corporations (and) rich people have figured out that if you can bend the government to help you just a little bit, its a tremendous payoff, the senator said, and if you can bend it to help you just a little bit more and a little bit more, the playing field just gets more and more tilted, and the rich and the powerful just do better and better.
The rumored 2016 presidential candidate said their influence went far beyond campaign donations.
Theyve invested in Washington in a million other ways, Warren said. The lobbyists are there every day, every meeting that occurs. Theyre there in the regulatory agencies, theyre all over the town to make sure that the tender fannies of the rich and the powerful are always carefully protected in every rule thats written, every conversation, in every discussion.

(10,622 posts)the conversation to some truths those running would rather not have to face, respond to, or even admit to.
She has already IMO shaped the debates to come regarding issues of the utmost importance that would have been mutually ignored by the typical politicians that are expected to run (with the notable exception of Bernie Sanders that does not shy away from such truth)

(259 posts)told me she does not like running or campaigning for office. You seem to be aware she was reluctant to run for the Senate. However, MA is a small state, but even there she did not enjoy campaigning for office. Not everyone has the fire in the belly required to run from place to place all across the whole US for a year and a half. She enjoys staying home and performing the duties she was elected to do. Speaking out on issues is very different from a presidential campaign. Please respect her wishes and understand this. At this point, it should be apparent to you she has no intention of running for President of the United States. Instead of wasting your time saying "run Warren run" you should urge, support, and help your second choice candidate in their run for president. Hoping Liz runs is just a waste of time and energy.

(10,622 posts)I imagine by your unnecessary rant you are upset she ran for the Senate as well.
I don't question always but when I do it's the intent of posters such as yourself.

(259 posts)I would love to see Warren run, but it ain't gonna happen. I hate to see so many people waste time and energy, which could be used to help other candidates who would welcome it. Running for President is no easy job, but some people enjoy the glad-handing and others don't. Unless it is a job you want, why do it.

Not many of us qualify.
In addition, it's unlikely that anyone who speaks up against money in politics, will actually GET money to drive their campaign, thus all but insuring a loss.

(41,399 posts)US congressional representatives, and highly paid, influence peddler- lobbyists involved in every aspect of this corrupt government. The same situation exists on the state and local level among politicians, lobbyists and RW think tank agents for corporations and banks. Bravo Elizabeth Warren!

Lyrics:
I pulled into Nazareth, was feelin' about half past dead
I just need some place where I can lay my head
"Hey, mister, can you tell me where a man might find a bed?"
He just grinned and shook my hand, "no" was all he said
Take a load off, Fanny
Take a load for free
Take a load off, Fanny
And (and) (and) you put the load right on me
(You put the load right on me)
I picked up my bag, I went lookin' for a place to hide
When I saw Carmen and the Devil walkin' side by side
I said, "Hey, Carmen, come on let's go downtown"
She said, "I gotta go but my friend can stick around"
Take a load off, Fanny
Take a load for free
Take a load off, Fanny
And (and) (and) you put the load right on me
(You put the load right on me)
Go down, Miss Moses, there's nothin' you can say
It's just ol' Luke and Luke's waitin' on the Judgment Day
"Well, Luke, my friend, what about young Anna Lee?"
He said, "Do me a favor, son, won't you stay and keep Anna Lee company?"
Take a load off, Fanny
Take a load for free
Take a load off, Fanny
And (and) (and) you put the load right on me
(You put the load right on me)
Crazy Chester followed me and he caught me in the fog
He said, "I will fix your rack if you'll take Jack, my dog"
I said, "Wait a minute, Chester, you know I'm a peaceful man"
He said, "That's okay, boy, won't you feed him when you can"
Yeah, take a load off, Fanny
Take a load for free
Take a load off, Fanny
And (and) (and) you put the load right on me
(You put the load right on me)
Catch a cannon ball now to take me down the line
My bag is sinkin' low and I do believe it's time
To get back to Miss Fanny, you know she's the only one
Who sent me here with her regards for everyone
Take a load off, Fanny
Take a load for free
Take a load off, Fanny
And (and) (and) you put the load right on me
(You put the load right on me)

In December, U.S. Justice Department officials announced that HSBC, Europe's largest bank, would pay a $1.92 billion fine after laundering $881 million for drug cartels in Mexico and Colombia. At the time, the Justice Department disputed accusations that it views some banks as too big to prosecute.
The two regulators, Under Secretary for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence David S. Cohen and Federal Reserve Governor Jerome H. Powell, deflected Warren's questions, saying that criminal prosecutions are for the Justice Department to decide.
"If you're caught with an ounce of cocaine, the chances are good you're going to jail. If it happens repeatedly, you may go to jail for the rest of your life," an exasperated Warren said, as she wrapped up her questioning. "But evidently, if you launder nearly a billion dollars for drug cartels and violate our international sanctions, your company pays a fine and you go home and sleep in your own bed at night - every single individual associated with this - and I just think that's fundamentally wrong."

Trafficking Lawsuit Against KBR for Wrongful Deaths in Iraq Dismissed
Families of 12 Nepali workers killed in Iraq in August 2004 have been denied permission by a federal judge to sue Kellogg, Brown & Root (KBR), the former subsidiary of Halliburton of Houston, in an abrupt reversal of a previous court decision.
The 12 men - Prakash Adhikari, Ramesh Khadka, Lalan Koiri, Mangal Limbu, Jeet Magar, Gyanendra Shrestha, Budham Sudi, Manoj Thakur, Sanjay Thakur, Bishnu Thapa, and Jhok Bahadur Thapa were killed by militants of the Ansar al-Sunna Army.
The families say the workers were recruited by Daoud & Partners in Jordan to work in a luxury hotel in Amman and promised salaries of $500 a month. After arriving in Amman, the men were taken to Iraq in an unprotected caravan of vehicles on August 17, 2004 to work at the Al Asad base for KBR.
Before the Nepalese arrived at the base, they were ambushed and kidnapped by a group of armed men. On August 31, the captors sent out a video message showing the execution of the one of the 12 men with a message: "We have carried out the sentence of God against 12 Nepalese who came from their country to fight the Muslims and to serve the Jews and the Christians . . . believing in Buddha as their God." The bodies of the men were never found.

A U.S. Fortress Rises in Baghdad:
Asian Workers Trafficked to Build World's Largest Embassy
John Owens didnt realize how different his job would be from his last 27 years in construction until he signed on with First Kuwaiti Trading & Contracting in November 2005. Working as general foreman, he would be overseeing an army of workers building the largest, most expensive and heavily fortified US embassy in the world. Scheduled to open in 2007, the sprawling complex near the Tigris River will equal Vatican City in size.
Not one of the five different US embassy sites he had worked on around the world compared to the mess he describes. Armenia, Bulgaria, Angola, Cameroon and Cambodia all had their share of dictators, violence and economic disruption, but the companies building the embassies were always fair and professional, he says. The Kuwait-based company building the $592-million Baghdad project is the exception. Brutal and inhumane, he says Ive never seen a project more fucked up. Every US labor law was broken.
<snip>
He also complained of poor sanitation, squalid living conditions and medical malpractice in the labor camps where several thousand low-paid migrant workers lived. Those workers, recruited on the global labor market from the Philippines, India, Pakistan and other poor south Asian countries, earned as little as $10 to $30 a day.
<snip>
My March 2006, First Kuwaitis operation began looking even sketchier to Owens as he boarded a nondescript white jet on his way back to Baghdad following some R&R in Kuwait city. He remembers being surrounded by about 50 First Kuwaiti laborers freshly hired from the Philippines and India. Everyone was holding boarding passes to Dubai not to Baghdad.
I thought there was some sort of mix up and I was getting on the wrong plane, says the 48-year-old Floridian who once worked as a fisherman with his father before moving into the construction business.

(10,321 posts)I know in this context she means "backside" or "butt" or "arse" and I agree with Senator Warren on her statement that laws are written to protect the powerful. But then, aren't an awful lot of laws worldwide drafted to protect the powerful too?
I hope that come the end of 2015 Elizabeth Warren does decide to run. In a Primary campaign, I'd support her if it's Warren vs. Hillary Clinton. In the general, it's clear in my eyes that a "generic Democrat" would be more electable than most of the current crop of Repukelican Party candidates - though Jeb Bush and Scott Walker seem to have more mainstream credibility than the rest.
