Police identify 82,000 PCs infected with online banking virus

TOKYO (Kyodo) -- About 82,000 personal computers in Japan and abroad have been found infected with a new kind of virus mainly targeted at transactions in Japan and programmed to make unauthorized money transfers in the background, Tokyo police said Friday.

Of the total, about 44,000 PCs are in Japan and the rest in dozens of other countries in regions including Asia, North America and Europe, the Metropolitan Police Department said.

For Japan, the police said they have asked Internet access providers to contact users of PCs infected by the virus called Vawtrak.

For other countries, the police have started providing information about the virus through the International Criminal Police Organization.
