Spending might top $3 billion dollars to get the next President elected in 2016. And I don't believe that number includes the additional spending that will go on for Senate and House races.
That is bordering on the ridiculous and obscene. Think of how many people that money could help.
Obviously - we need to take the money out of this process - that goes without question.
However I was thinking that some money well spent would be a PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT sponsored by some non-political group.
This PSA would be run on TV throughout the country during the run-up to the 2016 election. The gist of it basically would be a warning as to not believe any of the political commercials that candidates or Parties are running - because they are really spin, half truths and some lies - that are put out there to confuse you as a voter. You really need to do your own due diligence and learn about the candidates you vote for yourself. Then give some tips as to how to get info that is not biased and well balanced.
I can't believe how people are influenced by a 30 or 60 second commercial for a candidate that is really bogus. Where sound clips of a candidate are taken out of context to malign him or her.
I saw it first hand in the recent Mayoral election in Chicago - where Rahm's money supported TV ads right up til the polls closed. Many of these ads taking shots at Chuy or spinning the facts to make himself look better.
I know someone's going to tell me that these ads work - but they work to the detriment of the electorate.

(10,303 posts)That public service announcement is delivered by the person saying :"There now follows a Party Political Broadcast by the..... Party.".
This is a cue for everyone watching that TV channel to change it for at most the next ten minutes.
But seriously. ... $3 billion + for just the Presidential election. That is an awful lot of money! That could fund the entire North Carolina Ferry System for nearly 80 years.

(1,884 posts)Electing too many of the wrong politicians and the corporations could start to lose some of their tax free profits, to say nothing of having to maybe paying some taxes.
Besides which perks do you think the CEO's should be giving up? Which 180 foot yachts should go? The one in Hawaii, California, or in Maine? His McMansion in Hawaii, or the one in the Caribbean? To say noting of the various jets for the use of his political 'friends'. Think of the stress of rigging elections too.
Buying influence costs money.
