New York Doesn’t Want Africa’s Dead Wildlife

As controversy concerning the benefits of trophy hunting continues to grow, there’s at least one state that’s trying to make it abundantly clear that the dead bodies of Africa’s iconic wildlife aren’t welcome.

Legislation introduced in New York this week, dubbed the “Africa Big 5” bill, aims to fight wildlife trafficking and stop sport hunters from bringing their trophies back to the U.S.

The bill, which was drafted by Friends of Animals’ (FoA) Wildlife Law Program director Michael Harris and introduced by Senator Tony Avella, would ban the import, possession, sale or transportation of species in Africa who are being pushed to the brink by sport hunting and poaching, including elephants, lions, leopards, white rhinos and black rhinos. Violators would face up to two years in prison.

“We’re supposed to be the stewards of these species and shame on us if we allow them to become extinct because of sport hunting,” Sen. Avella told 1010 WINS. “If we can stop it here, we can send a message to the entire world that New Yorkers and New York will not tolerate this.”
