Deputy: Arpaio told me to defy court order
A sergeant for the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office said Sheriff Joe Arpaio
personally instructed him to effectively disregard a federal judge's orders to
stop enforcing federal immigration law, according to Tuesday testimony.
In Dec. 2011, Judge G. Murray Snow instructed Sheriff's officials to
stop detaining people solely on the suspicion of being in the country illegally,
and without suspicion of a state crime.
But Sgt. Brett Palmer, formerly a supervisor in the human-smuggling unit,
testified Tuesday that despite his efforts to implement training that would
reflect this order, his training suggestions never made it to patrol deputies.
When plaintiffs' attorney Cecillia Wang asked if Palmer had an opinion of
why the training never materialized, Palmer responded that it
"was contrary to the goals and objectives of the sheriff."
