First Hillary backer from '08 dumps her this time

This is a small story that could presage a much larger one in coming months about Hillary Clinton's last-chance bid to become president.

One of Clinton's more prominent backers for the Democrat nomination in 2008 has opted to endorse someone else for the party nod next year in Philadelphia. Former two-term Miami Mayor Manny Diaz said Tuesday he was going with Maryland's former Gov. Martin O'Malley this time.

The 60-year-old Diaz, a Cuban emigre and former head of the U.S. Conference of Mayors, is one of the country's more prominent and successful Hispanic politicians and a key "get" for any Democrat seeking votes in the crucial swing state of Florida.

Not only is Diaz prepared to endorse O'Malley, he's also put his name atop a breakfast for the former Baltimore mayor to meet-and-greet Miami Democrats on May 8. People attending such affairs are prime donor candidates.

I like O'Malley very much, on the issues he's addressed, so far. Don't know where he stands on some other issues, such as our atrocious neocon FPs eg.

But so far, he sounds like an excellent candidate.

He is supposed to announce in May.

If I were advising her, I would tell her to fire all her advisers and just be herself, what does SHE believe in, forget about who she might offend, and just tell the public what she envisions for the future of this country.

I always get the impression when I listen to her, that she is being 'careful'. Eg, when asked about torture rather than simply say 'torture is wrong, I do not support it under any conditions', she waffled and said that she might, under certain circumstances, use it, but very rarely' or something to that effect. That shocked me frankly. She sure wasn't appealing to the base of the Dem Party so who was she trying to appease?

You cannot appease people who are wrong so you have to stick with what you know to be right. ''

I think I would like her a lot better if she just be herself.

She's popular in Florida. Most peep here simply recognize the name and don't pay attention to issues like TPP. Probably more important, she has the strong backing of Fla Dem Party power brokers, led by corporatist DLC types... Bill Nelson and DWS, eg. They like candidates who are former republicans.
People here are slowly becoming aware of the corporatist agenda, and there's still plenty of time for primary candidates to lay out the issues at stake. And of course there's still plenty of time for Hillary and her supporters to turn off primary voters, as they've done before. Basically, she's so well known there's not much room for her numbers to go up, but they can easily go down if tepid support finds candidates they prefer.

admonishing right wing sources. Would you be in such a tizzy if I were to post one of your Fox News appearances? Wouldn't that be coming from a right wing source as well?

I've always wanted to ask you that question.

Since I don't read right wing sources, it's hard to know who all of them are. Basic mistake made here from time to time, and I'm sure if you look at my posts for the past 14 years, you'll see I'm a great reader and poster of left wing publications.

Too bad this good news for O'Malley is clouded by articles like this. Then again, it will probably help greatly with name recognition to make it about Clinton.
