General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsYour vote for President is the swing vote, the entire election depends on it.
It is November 2016, somehow you have found out that the entire election for President is down to YOUR one vote.
Democratic candidate is Hillary
Republican candidate is any republican
You can vote 3rd party, not at all, or for either candidate.
Because of the math if you do NOT vote for Hillary, the republican (whether that be Scott Walker or Jeb Bush or whoever) wins.
What do you do?

(5,018 posts)I think it is because this is supposed to be a board for democrats and liberals.
Aster explaining 300 times why there is a massive difference, especially on social issues, between the two, and a person still insisting that since they cant get the exact thing they want they will throw all that in the shit can, just a part of me cant accept that
I especially want to try and create a way to identify people who voted that way if the election is lost, maybe not by name because that would be too much, but like the PUMA deal, we need an acronym and name for people who will literally throw women, minorities, gays and the poor into the ditch because they couldnt get everything they wanted.
We need a name to hang on those people and we need it soon.

One of the 99
(2,280 posts)That's just a rationalization so Nader voters don't have to take responsibility for their actions.
morningfog
(18,115 posts)There was nothing illegal in Nader's run or people voting for Nader. There was one group, one party who stole the election.
There were thousands of factors that made the election close. But only one theft.
By the way, I voted for Gore and was incensed when Bush stole the election, and still am really.
One of the 99
(2,280 posts)Nor did I say that Nader's run was illegal. (Although I question his ethics in accepting GOP money to run attack ads against Gore.)
I'm just saying that Nader and his voters should take some responsibility for their actions in helping to put the 2000 election so close that it made it possible for Bush to steal it. They are not the only factor in that, there were many others as well. But Nader and his voters were still a factor and should stop avoiding responsibility for their part and coming up with excuses to blame everyone else.
morningfog
(18,115 posts)One of the 99
(2,280 posts)But they have responsibility for the consequences of their vote. In this case the consequence was putting the election so close that enabled Bush to steal it.
Take Florida out of it and look at New Hampshire, Nader's vote threw that state to Bush. Bush only beat Gore by 7,000 votes yet there were over 22,000 for Nader. If only a third of those people had voted for Gore rather than Nader; New Hampshire would have gone to Gore and made Florida irrelevant.
morningfog
(18,115 posts)more votes. Or in Florida, the blame is with the bad ballots in Broward County that recorded Gore votes for Buchanan. Or blame the weather.
I refuse to blame anyone other than Bush and his cohorts. Any other blame or responsibility-shifting is providing Bush with cover and is a horrible distraction.
One of the 99
(2,280 posts)And all should take responsibility for their actions, including Nader voters.

(50,566 posts)"Any Republican" is going to be a Lovecraftian nightmare. If our choices are Hillary Clinton or some guy who's going to start four wars, ban any vestige of religious or social freedom that conflicts with the King James Bible and run this nation into a very deep economic hole then fill the hole in, then there's no choice at all.
Now...here's a FUN exercise.
It's a four-way race. Your choices are:
Hillary Clinton and...I don't know, one of the Castro brothers maybe?...on the Democratic ticket.
Any two Republicans selected at random on the GOP ticket. Since all Republicans are basically alike, the names don't matter.
A leftist third-party...say, Bernie Sanders plus a native-born person whose politics mirror those of Seattle city councilperson Kshama Sawant. Their ticket would feature a lot of issues we'd like, such as defense cuts, gay marriage everywhere and legal pot but also some we wouldn't, like a 50-percent increase in the income tax and a doubling of H1B quotas.
A right-wing third party...They'll close Gitmo and end the war in Afghanistan but they'll also try for a "personhood" amendment, end birthright citizenship and declare the US a Christian nation.
If my one vote would put any of the four in office, without knowing any more than is written here I'd have to choose the leftist third party, then Hillary, next the Republican and finally the "Constitution" Party candidate. But if it's "If I vote for Hillary we get President Clinton and if I vote for anyone else I get President Trump and Vice President Rubio," there's no question that my vote has to go to Hillary.
