I thought Diane Sawyer did an excellent job. Jenner strikes me as a bit eccentric - not at all related to his gender, just to a life in Hollywood, with the Kardashians, etc.
That being said - what he had to say was really eye opening. I especially appreciated learning that gender and sexuality are not necessarily the same. There was a great quote: Sexuality is who you go to bed with; gender is who you go to bed as (or something like that).
It kills me that transgendered folks are tortured, humiliated, beaten. To not be accepted for who you are at your essence... Children and young people. High rates of suicide.
I hope Bruce's coming out is helpful to this community. Aside from his own personal idiosyncracies, unrelated to this aspect, I think it will be. I believe him when he says that is his goal. And shame on those in the media and others who mock him for this. I'll admit it's been a learning curve for me.

(21,054 posts)...the explanation of the difference between the issues of transgender issues and homosexuality. As close as I can quote this is:
One is about who you go to bed WITH and the other is about who you go to bed AS. Gave me some clarity on the issues.
I enjoyed the interview and also thought Sawyer did a good job. I also had a lot of compassion for Jenner and realized why at age 65 years he is making the transition.

(108,980 posts)And I thought all of his kids were wonderful, especially the sons who spoke the most.
And his sister was lovely.
None of them were asking for this kind of publicity, but they were so supportive.

(904 posts)I can only speak for myself, having been comfortable in my gender since probably the day I was born, so the whole concept of transgender is so alien. I think what people don't understand or what makes them uncomfortable they tend to make fun of and perhaps having a high profile individual to discuss this is good for us all...I hope so.

(24,736 posts)I know for my own self I was pretty insensitive 7-10 years ago.
Remember "Pat" on SNL? Julia Sweeney's androgynous character? I can't recall if the joke was on us, or on her? I hope it was us.
There were people I knew whom I couldn't decipher if they were male, female, or something in between. I now see how barbaric it was of me to even care ...
