an ex-bf served in the Peace Corps in Nepal in the early 70's. He had to come back home early on the brink of death from cholera.

I just made a donation to Doctors Without Borders - I feel like I have to contribute something before I can read about what is going on in Nepal

He's a US citizen and loyal Democrat who leads treks in Nepal and had a group of three headed in the direction of the epicenter. They were scheduled to be on the road when it hit. But the clients took a selfie of themselves in a pizza place were OK-- relatives found out. No word yet from K. but I'm picturing him in the thick of the rescue effort. Very fit and resourceful man to have in a disaster zone. Sending him strongest wishes for health and strength, waiting to hear. Might be a long time before people can contact loved ones with news.

Have not been to Nepal, but have been to Delhi and Jammu so the streets of Kathmandu look very familiar from north Indian travels.

on edit-- now that we know he is OK, my thoughts and prayers are to all the rescuers who face such a huge task ahead.

I had a tattoo done by a wonderful tattoo artist there, so the country is always written into my skin ,,, I also met many wonderful people.

The images I have seen of the damage in Kathmandu are devastating.

Google put up a People Finder for the earthquake if anyone has friends or relatives over there that they haven't heard from yet.

They live in the apartment upstairs. Husband and father arrived here about a year ago, and has been working and sending money back home. The first week in March, Wife and two small children arrived from Kathmandu. We thank God they left when they did. Their families back in Nepal are safe and uninjured, and we grieve with the Nepalese people.

and traveling through the countryside. Awesomely beautiful country, and wonderful warm people. My heart breaks for them.

This is so unbelievably horrific.

A big-assed earthquake in its own right.

You can fly into Kathmandu, and you can take a small plane into the mountains (I was in the Khumbu region, by Everest). Unfortunately, most anything you need to bring in for relief supplies has to be trekked over by Sherpa or yak, and it's not a fast project.

So many tiny villages will be devastated.

If you need a list of agencies, I'll try to dig one up.

The pictures I'm seeing out of there are horrible. It's not a terrain well suited for maneuvering a disaster. Even Kathmandu airport is effectively down.
