JEFFERSON CITY -- The Missouri House has passed legislation aimed at shutting down an institute that trains women for roles in government and politics.
The measure, approved Monday night by a 93-59 vote, targets the Sue Shear Institute for Women in Public Life at the University of Missouri-St. Louis.
Supporters of the institute say it is nonpartisan, helps women enter public life and contributes to diversity in government.
But some Republican lawmakers contend it churns out liberal trainees for Democrats. The legislation would ban colleges and governmental entities from operating the institute. The House measure comes after the Senate previously passed a version of the state budget that would ban funding for the institute. Lawmakers from the two chambers still are working on a final version of the budget.

(82,849 posts)Just because it was a Republican initiative, railroaded through by Republicans and it just happens to hurt women, I suppose all you libruls are going to make a big stink about it, and call it some kind of "Republican" "war" on "women." When all the time it's really Democrats who are hostile to women, trying to get them into government, as if women know what's best for them! Preposterous on its face, when Republicans do such a stellar job of enacting legislation aimed at women and their lady parts concerns.

(114,904 posts)colleges and universities from operating this institute? I understand that they can vote not to fund it, but what if it's privately funded?

This OP blends well with others about Missouri that I have seen recently. They all serve
to reinforce my opinion.
