No one is more surprised than I am. Or more grateful that I finally managed to pull it off.

(5,325 posts)I tried the lozenges, but they gave me horrible.......really horrible.......hiccups. Had tried patches a couple of times in the past and reacted badly to them (really bad, big red whelts wherever I put them and face it, after awhile one runs out of places that can be scratched in public.......). Didn't want to go the Chantix route.
Fact is, I was just ready. Tired of the mess and the hassle and the expense and the whole business of smoking. I was lucky in that I had much less problem with the addiction than with the habit. Kept reaching for the pack or an ashtray or lighter that wasn't there. So glad that all that's in my past.

(45,358 posts)I'm long quit, but still take nicotine (the lowest possible dose) with my vape. I can live with that.

(103 posts)It's always good to hear about others successfully quitting. I've stopped smoking numerous times over the years and I always found the habit to be the hardest thing to break. I've been off of cigarettes since early December sometime. Though I admit I miss it sometimes, I hope 5 years from now I can say I'm still smoke free.

(5,275 posts)I dabbled in it for years and now, years later, can't believe I ever did it at all.
It's astonishing now to look bad at those TV ads from the 50s which had doctors recommending brands of cigarettes.

(441 posts)I quit in January, 1991, using the three month, patch system, and never lit up another. Nicotine free for twenty-four years, so far.

(81,267 posts)That's a major accomplishment, for sure. I've lived with smokers on and off for years. I greatly appreciate what a struggle it is. I've watched it close-up. My mother was a chain-smoker. Probably THE contributing factor to her bad health in later years. And I'm sure its complications are what eventually caused her death. Glad my husband quit, and our son did, too. Thankfully our daughter and her fiance are non-smokers, as I am, myself.

(4,033 posts)Of course, I had help. When I passed out in the garage one evening, was taken by ambulance to the hospital, admitted that night, had an angiogram next day, and a triple-bypass the next, the nurse asked me if I smoked. She told me I wouldn't be able to smoke for a bit, since I wouldn't be allowed far enough outside to get beyond the hospital's no smoking zone. So I quit cold turkey.
But the real kudos go to my wife, who was also a smoker. She figured it would be too hard on me to stay quit if she was smoking. So, she had her last smoke on the way to the hospital to pick me up when I was discharged. She went cold turkey while trying to nurse me through rehab.
My quitting was fairly easy. I was too sick to notice. Her's was tough. But we are both smoke free 10 years later.

(23,156 posts)I have a sister who cannot completely stop smoking despite more than one heart attack. In fact, I just got an email from our younger sister that sister who smokes is once again in the hospital after another one. I am angry at her and very sad, because she really is killing herself.
