The Speech that Made Obama President

Published on Aug 30, 2012

In 2004, a one-term senator from Illinois took the stage to deliver the keynote speech at the Democratic National Convention in Boston. By the time Barack Obama had finished speaking, Democrats across the country knew they had seen the future of their party.

Yes, many saw that, I did. I know I am accused of being a blind follower here. Yup I am considered stupid, a BOGGER, won't even go into what a jury member said about me. It was so ugly! They hid behind the blind skirts of justice to insult me. They called a woman one of the worst words.

Do not fuck with me.

Mr President! Love you~ You Rock!

I remember thinking: "He's definitely someone to watch!"

I didn't say: "There's our next Democratic President!" I wish I had; it would make for such a great story. Even when he announced his candidacy in 2007, I remember thinking that it would be another 20 years before we had a black President. I've never been happier to be wrong.

A dear friend was in the convention center that night, maybe even on the stage, IIRC? (long story)

He was using my place to park. (You know what Boston parking is, even on a quiet evening.) He came back so excited.

I never thought he would get elected nationally because he is black, and because of his name. I was wrong.

I tell the story each time this comes up... I recorded the speech and took it to school the next day (teaching at a small school) played it for all students and teachers and told them to "remember this man!" I knew.

I have never waivered in my admiration and respect for President Obama

(as well as Michelle Obama, which caused me to act a fool when I met her at the White House )

She is human, not a walking portrait of propriety. I don't think I've seen that before?

She is educated and strong, not an accessory.

The Hope and Change I expected did not come because I set the bar waaay too high with my expectations. I am happy with much of what we got, even happier with what I believe was prevented. Now I am a Sanders supporter and though my expectations bar is again set high, this time instead of: "Yes We Can", it is now: "We Damn Well Better!"

Someone at DU posted the transcript, and I saved it on my hard drive. I knew this young man was a comer.

As for Jury members, remember what I said about not letting yourself be goaded. Answer once, answer twice, and then walk away from jerks. I don't know where they are scraping up DU jury members these days, but when I alerted on something I thought was pretty egregious, the jury not only let it stand (their right) but at least two of them took the opportunity to to be personally nasty to me (which I would call unprofessional in other circumstances). Rhymes with Bucket.

either at the alerter or the poster who has been alerted on.

No one can do that on the board without at least risking an alert and no one can do it anonymously on the board. IMO, that's an abuse of the jury system.

Awesome...I knew.

I remember all the stupid out there as well sweets. I remember what you said, hard sometimes to follow the rule~ I am human and get pissed. I am sure the jury member that said it laughs like hell to now it hurt me. No matter, I am a far better person than they are.

Hugs~

I remember thinking - "HE'S gonna be President someday." And I remember actually getting excited about that idea. It's like - I almost can't wait to see what this guy could do. New thinking. New vigor. Fresh - literally a breath of fresh air. I remember thinking that we really seemed to be building a STELLAR farm team of young people coming up to, who would be taking the wheel for the next generation.

You watched and listened - and you just KNEW this was one up 'n' comer who was destined for bigger things. It was utterly show-stopping! A spectacular debut - the best I think I've ever seen! And I've seen a fair number of keynote speeches by now. It was a "keep your eye on that one. He's Gonna BE Somebody" speech.

It was pretty damn breath-taking, really.

He was a state senator from IL at that time. Running for a U.S. senate seat.

I got the same feeling when I heard him deliver that speech. Wow! This guy is GOOD! I still feel that way.

Wish he could run for a 3rd term.

and I knew as well. To think that was only eleven years ago. So much has changed, and not only the job-caused grey hair and more mature face! IMO, he's (mostly) lived up to the promise he showed that night. Just think what he might have accomplished without asshole, racist, traitorous (R) obstruction at every step.

that (He's in NJ Democratic politics) and he actually sent me an email the day before that famous speech and told me not to miss it. He declared Obama 2008 winner from that day - no matter what anyone else said. And he was right.

He also said 'Christie is history' from day one of bridgegate and said there was a lot more 'troubled water' under that the bridge of Crispy's troubles.
