Carson Warns 'More Groups' Will Want Marriage Equality If Gays Get It

Carson started out saying if you "change the definition of marriage for one group, what do you say to the next group?"

"What is the next group?" Harwood interjected.

"Do you say, 'well we changed it for this group but that's it, we're not changing it for anybody else?" Carson asked. "Does that seem fair?"

"Well, but what other groups are there?" Harwood asked.

Yes, we associate it with asshole offshoots of the old Mormon church who couldn't accept what seemed like capitulation to the US government in the 1890's, and who treat their women like breeding machines, but what IF three or more fully capable consenting adults wished to have the societal and governmental benefits of marriage?

At least they could make the case that it was 'traditional', in that plural marriage has existed in many cultures for thousands of years.

The next group is family members who are economically dependent on each other. Say that a mother and daughter have lived together for decades, have strong emotional ties, and have interlinked their finances. When the mother dies, there will be inheritance law consequences (possibly including taxes) that a married couple would not have to deal with. Why shouldn't that family unit be given the preferential legal standing that a husband and wife have in all fifty states?

It's not hard to imagine the possibilities, when you reflect on the financial and societal benefits that marriage has automatically conferred upon the members of a marriage that are afforded to no one else. Those were the things that people fighting for equal marriage were looking to achieve for committed gay and lesbian couples.

9. Not at all
Fri May 8, 2015, 11:49 PM

I'm presenting them as examples of reasons NOT to use when defending equal marriage.

To steal a quote from a fundie, if we're supposed to treat Adam and Steve the same as Adam and Eve, then whose business is it of ours if Adam, Eve and Steve want to live together?

It's only a slippery slope if you don't ever want to go where that incline takes you to. And if you don't, then explain why, just like the homophobes have tried unsuccessfully to do when it comes to same-gender marriage equality. I'm in favor of not treating any sort of married people specially, or at least allowing two or more consenting adults to get that treatment if they so desire.

any combination of consenting adults is recognized?

Have you always held that position or was it only when members of the same sex started marrying?

32. No, my position
Mon May 11, 2015, 12:58 AM
May 2015

is to grant marriage rights and priveleges to groups of two or more consenting adults who have an economic need for the benefits of marriage, when the parties thereto have a committed relationship to benefit from such recognition. I surely do not take the position that none should have this granted until all have it granted, I realize that such recognition will take place gradually. Opposite sex couples came first, same sex couples come second, and all the rest in due time.

Again, enunciate a reason based on something other than the number two, or biological relation as to whether the economic benefits society confers with "marriage" should not be given to people who share an economic well-being that would be aided by such benefits.

How is it any of our business if two consenting adults in love want to marry?

Face it, people engage in all sorts of activities with each other behind closed doors, married or not.

Almost as long in a few other states. It still hasn't been changed for "Other groups" in those states. Whatever those other groups are. More and more people across the nation are becoming accepting of marriage equality and the more people accept it, the more unhinged the homophobes become. Can't wait to see their reaction when SCOTUS makes marriage equality the law of the land nationwide.

It ignores the facts that children and animals cannot consent to legal contracts. People love to make fun of this type of bigotry, and while there is a humorous nature to it, sadly, it is very serious, especially when it is a respected person with high educational credentials.
