The price of nice nails

I've often wondered how so many nail salons could survive. In the last decade, just about every place I've lived or visited has had a conspicuous glut of salons. I'm not really surprised by what the NYT reports; but it saddens me nonetheless. The article following the one below (link at end) gets even worse. Makes me kinda glad I bite my nails.

In Idaho, manicurists rent booth space, provide their own supplies, and run their own businesses from within the confines of someone else's salon. If people don't come in to get their nails done, you make no money.
