Cold winds have been coming over the Rockies and bringing a lot of hail and rain.
I have noticed over the years that when cold wind comes over Pikes Peak, the bad weather affects a huge part of the country. With its counter-clockwise movement, it usually hits the panhandle of Texas and Oklahoma with strong winds or tornadoes.
If it is unusually strong and cold, it can affect Missouri, southern Illinois, and points even further east.
We had another strong hail storm early this morning but it is not real cold.

(15,808 posts)Cloudy and upper 70s tomorrow, followed by a few days of warmish rain. Warmer than usual, but not outrageously hot. I've planted my tomatoes since we are getting enough 50 degree nights for them to survive.
No hail. No drought here either (certainly around the state, but not in Portland).

Tomorrow will be similar with a greater chance of rain...iow another perfect day for the administration to opt for commencement on the lawn...
But you've sent me into reminiscing about the May 10, 1990 ~10ish inch snowstorm.

(13,069 posts)sunny, warm (near 75 today). Lots of yard work in store for today...and hiking tomorrow with the kids.

(12,958 posts)February instead of April.
Usually it's 55 degrees and drizzling rain for weeks on end this time of year. We don't get drizzle rain over the winter anymore like we used to.
dixiegrrrrl
(60,010 posts)Really? When did that change?
And what are winters like now?
I always found Feb. up there so damn depressing, gloomy as hell, damp and chilly. One of the reasons I left.
Now WE are getting long rainy late winter/early spring weather here in SW Ala.! It used to be sunny and fairly dry.
AgingAmerican
(12,958 posts)Between late September and May, it rained almost constantly, but sometimes barely more than mist coming down. you could walk around in the rain and barely get wet. Constant drizzle. That began to change about 8 or 9 years ago. Since then, when it rains in the winter it rains harder and less often. It has definitely changed a lot since I moved here, and especially in the last few years.
Now it's a lot warmer and more humid too boot.
dixiegrrrrl
(60,010 posts)Since it drizzled a lot, we got by with hats, and even light jackets.
When it really rained hard everyone stayed inside as much as possible, but it was still possible to wander around outside a lot during winter, which rarely got cold, and snow storms were 3-4 year events.
Plus people knew how to drive in the snow.
I left Puget Sound in the mid 80's. All that cloud cover was getting to be a bit much.
Thanks for the info. about the weather change...

AgingAmerican
(12,958 posts)...eastern Washington, not wo much. I drove over the mountains in mid April and there was no snow except on the highest crags. No snowpack. Normally it doesn't look like that until late June/early July. Keechelus Lake was full to the brim, so much that the pine trees on the island were partially submerged and it was only 7 or 10 feet below the interstate. Obviously they are saving as much water as possible for the coming dry year in the eastern side of the state.

Probably will demise the salmon runs on the peninsula this year, not enough river water to spawn upstream. Forests will most likely start to die off too. This is what climate scientists have been predicting. Seems like it's coming down on us all at once.

Wish I could give him my memories of what it used to be up there.

(12,153 posts)our weekend forecast says anywhere from 8-12 inches of SNOW! What? This isn't the Colorado mountains or Deadwood, South Dakota, for crying loud! (Glad for the moisture, though, and I wish CA and other dry areas would get some.)
I saw this toon a little while ago at Bouletcorp and thought, how fitting.

(46,179 posts)Not that it's unusual for us to have wild swings in the high desert, but...
We got a heavy duty snowstorm early in November, early for us, then warm rain the rest of the winter, so the snow pack is too low. Again. We've heated up to the high end of high temps all spring, just to suddenly dip back down. This week's example: there's a 20 degree difference between Wednesday's high and today's, and it's supposed to drop down that 20 degrees again by this coming Wednesday.
It's been breezy...not unusual.

(502 posts)It's been fairly steady at 15 degrees below average since November 2014, heated up to 15 above average this week but early next week we will see seasonable weather, which will be a refreshing change. We'll probably go back to cool weather after that. We are not in drought but I have noticed a lack of soaking rains which we usually have plenty of in Feb, March, April. Climate change is coming but it looks like we'll go last.

(31,389 posts)Booked to go to the beach tomorrow--Emerald Isle, NC--and the first named Tropical Storm of the
season (which isn't supposed to start until June) ,Ana, is predicted to make landfall not far from there
around 9 am. Great.
So, we'll be packed and ready to go, BUT we'll re-evaluate tomorrow morning. I don't want to
make the drive across coastal plains if there are 50-60 mph winds and/or the area is under tornado
watch. So, we may end up waiting until Monday morning to drive down.
Fun, huh?

We are apparently getting some of the Jersey shore sea breeze front trying to push this far west. That is making it hujid (73% humidity). But it's been very dry of late here in the Philly area. Haven't had rain in a couple weeks now (and they had to contain a big wildfire over in Jersey in Burlington County yesterday due to the warm dry conditions).

It was too hot, too soon here, so this is much needed. Plus that green pollen dust wasn't going to go away without some nice rain. That stuff needs to wash away before the humid summer comes in.
Not very windy and the temperature must be just a tad low, according to my and my husbands achy bones!
