Calif. city official quits after backlash for complaining ‘illegals should have to work like slaves’

A neighborhood official in Silver Lake, California resigned from office on Thursday after residents complained over disparaging remarks she made online regarding immigrants, KCAL-TV reported.

The backlash against Karen Speitel began after she complained about immigrants in the comment thread for a KNBC-TV story about a tunnel used to smuggle drugs between the US and Mexico.

“All illegals should have to work like slaves for free for every single citizen who came here the right way!” Speitel wrote. “Shame on the sneaky, lawless dregs who have no respect for the law and how hard real citizens have had to work to become legal.”

In another post, Speitel blamed immigrants for spoiling their “pockets” of Los Angeles, writing, “the distruction [sic] I see all over is from Mexicans.”

According to LAist, Speitel’s colleagues on the Silver Lake Neighborhood Council began getting emails criticizing her remarks, leading them to ask her to resign her position during a meeting on Wednesday....


“While a person has free speech, I think that you have to call into question their judgment when they are going to be voting on things that affect the community at large, and they have a skewed opinion of a large percentage of that community,” he said.

Grow up people! It's the poors you are really hating there.

When someone undocumented flies in on a plane or comes off a cruise ship, you kiss their feet and feel all warm and fuzzy admiring their wealth. Your bitter hatred does not stop with immigrants, and we all see you for what you are.

If you don't want pobrecitos, work for decent trade policies with Mexico. They are not coming because they want to hear you rant and rave and would prefer to stay at home.

And with climate change, which you also deny, more people will move around in this country and more will be coming in. You cannot draw a line in the sand and say this far and no farther to humans in need.

5. I don't know why right-wingers take illegal immigration so personally.

In the hierarchy of exploitive behaviors, entering a country illegally to wash dishes for below minimum wage is pretty low on the list.

It's the employers who are scum. If you can't deliver a high enough quality of product or service to justify the price impact of obeying the law, then you simply shouldn't be in business. And nothing stops anyone from ratting out their competitors if they actually give a shit about the law, so there's really no excuse for entire industries to be dependent on illegal immigration.

These businesses don't just break immigration laws, they break labor and environmental laws too because their employees can't complain. If you want to hire an illegal immigrant because you like them personally, that would be fine with me - pay them the same wages as an American, give them the same benefits as an American, and protect their safety the same as an American.

Someone who risks their life to be here deserves it way more than some rat who inherits a country and then fucks it over for a Mercedes.
