Transformer Explosion at Indian Point Nuclear Power Plant in Westchester; No Injuries Reported

A transformer exploded at the Indian Point Nuclear Power Facility in Westchester, New York, on Saturday, police said.

There were no reports of injuries in the blast and resulting fire, which Indian Point Energy said was caused by a "transformer failure."

The fire has since been put out and there are no ongoing emergency threats, according to the Buchanan Police Department.

Indian Point Energy said there was no danger to employees or the public and that Unit 3 of the facility safely shut down as designed after the transformer failed.

Oddly enough, they rely on outside electric sources to keep things under control. I guess that's so a local failure doesn't cause a meltdown.

When a transformer goes, it's spectacular, sounds like a small bomb going off, lots of sparks and occasionally, fire.

that even if it is something to worry about, it will be presented as nothing to worry about for as long as possible.

So, in conclusion, it is hard not to be a little worried anyway.

I live in an - earthquake, tsunami, lahar, volcano, sinkholed, forest fire, flash flood, yellowstone caldera. etc. - prone zone.

And we get the air from Asia (Fukishima, China, etc.) plus windstorms, white outs, blah, blah, blah and baggers, too.

I operate on the Strawberry and Tiger system. We're all doomed.
